Warren sophomores to hold mental health, suicide awareness event Sunday

Photo submitted to Times Observer Warren Area High School Class of 2025 officers (from left) Secretary Charlotte Keeports, Vice President Lily Walker, Co-President Ella Getner, Co-President Sophie Walker, and Treasurer Madison McDunn have organized the second-annual Mental Health and Suicide Awareness Event for 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the high school.

It’s ok to not be ok… but there is help available.

The sophomore class at Warren Area High School is hosting a mental health and suicide awareness event from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday.

“It’s going to be more of a community event – get people together and get people educated,” Class of 2025 Co-President Ella Getner said. “We’re going to have games and food.

“It’s a not-for-profit event,” Co-President Sophie Walker said. “It’s mostly just educational – getting information out.”

“We’re really hoping for good weather,” Getner said.

The event will be held outdoors if the weather is good or inside the high school if not, as was the case last year.

“We’ll have the Tabouli Food Truck and Alyssa Wismar will be playing live music,” Walker said.

There will be mental health vendors including Family Services of Warren County and C.O.R.E – Choosing Openness Regarding Experiences.

Any donations generated from the event will go toward raising awareness and the class’ scholarships – awarded to two students, one from Warren Area High School and one from another Warren County school, each year who plan to enter mental health related fields.

“It’s not only important for our school community, but also our local community,” Walker said. “In times of tragedy, it’s better to group together and come together and form awareness.”

“We want to prevent anything from happening that we could have prevented with a little bit of information,” Getner said. “We want to get people the resources that they need starting at the school.”

“It’s important to keep going against the stigma and it’s important to realize it’s ok to not be ok,” Vice-President Lily Walker said. “Talk about it.”
