City to revamp camera systems at pool, parking garage; add compost site

Ongoing vandalism and misuse of several City of Warren amenities has prompted an investment in an upgraded camera system.

“We are upgrading the cameras at the parking garage, compost facility and at the pool,” Department of Public Works Superintendent Joe Reinke said.

The Clark Street parking garage and the pool have cameras currently but Reinke said there have been “issues with them…. You’d be surprised how much goes on in the parking garage after hours.”

“We realized there were some flaws in our system” he added.

City Manager Mike Holtz said there have been a couple incidents at the parking garage this winter.

“The elevator itself was knocked off the track,” he said. “(We’re) thinking someone kicked it and knocked it off the track.”

Holtz said city police have also had to “chase people out of the stairwells in the winter. (There is) some sadness in Warren people don’t realize.”

Misuse of the compost site at Harmar Street is what has led to the decision to install cameras there.

“We had people dumping trash,” Reinke said, “contractors coming in (with) full trailer loads of debris. It’s hard for us to keep our eyes on it 24/7.”

Holtz said that the post and conduit were run for cameras at the compost site but were never installed.

It’s an intermittent problem and the site is only open to city residents.

“If (someone is a) city resident, they are more than welcome to use it,” Holtz said, noting it’s “not made” for contractor use.

“We’re going to try to monitor it more now with a camera system,” he said. “We need to do something.”
