Summer Music School returns for in-person classes

After two years of virtual programming, Warren County Summer Music School is returning to in-person classes.

The 33rd season of SMS will run weekday mornings from Monday, June 13, through Friday, July 1, at Beaty-Warren Middle School.

“The program is open to all students entering fifth grade in the fall of 2022 through and including adults,” Director Denise Pearson said.

The class offerings include a variety skill levels for all band and orchestra instruments, “as well as guitar, bass guitar, ukulele, harp, recorder, handbells, piano, and pipe organ,” Pearson said. “Several singing class are offered, plus instruction in visual arts, several styles of dance, theater, and yoga.”

The visual arts programming includes drawing, painting, sculpture, fiber arts, handcrafted instruments, photography, and stop-motion animation.

“Additional music classes include music theory, songwriting, GarageBand, instrument repair, rap, music and animals, and music in other cultures,” Pearson said. “Performance opportunities include orchestra, jazz band, harp choir, and show choir.”

“The wide range of classes enables beginners as well as advanced musicians and artists to develop and hone their skills in a nurturing and collaborative environment,” she said.

Course descriptions are available by visiting www.wcsms.org.

“Through the generous support of The Pennsylvania Council of the Arts, Community Foundation of Warren County, and private gifts, the school is able to offer hands-on instruction for the discounted tuition of $125 total for three weeks of five daily classes,” Pearson said.

Registration is required — through www.wcsms.org — and class sizes are limited. “Students are scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis,” she said. “May 1 is the cut-off date for guaranteeing that particular classes will be offered and for reserving a seat on the bus.”
