New weight restrictions placed on Route 62 bridge

State officials have put a weight restriction on a bridge described in “poor” condition that’s located on Route 62 between Warren and Tidioute.

PennDOT announced the move on Monday regarding the bridge on Route 62 over Lenhart Run in Pleasant Township.

“The bridge has not previously had a weight restriction,” a statement explained. “The new restriction will limit the weight crossing it to 18 tons, except combinations are 25 tons.”

Vehicles exceeding the weight limit will have to use alternate routes including US 6 as well as routes 27 and 36.

“There is a permitting process that truck drivers can imply for if they might exceed the posted weight,” Jill Harry, PennDOT district press officer explained. “This could possibly grant them conditional approval to use the bridge. Those applications are accepted here at the Oil City office.”

PennDOT said the decision was made in response to a routine inspection that uncovered “deterioration” to the 23-foot concrete bridge.

“Creating the weight restriction will slow further deterioration on the bridge and will preserve safety until repairs or a replacement can occur,” PennDOT says. “Work on the bridge is anticipated to occur in 2022.”

The bridge dates to 1928 and is classified as in poor condition. PennDOT says about 1,000 vehicles use the bridge daily.
