Chapman announces early goose season

Pennsylvania is inviting hunters to take some waterfowl that are fouling waters and beaches.

In order to reduce the number of Canadian geese, and the accompanying amount of Canada goose excrement, at Chapman State Park, early hunting will be permitted in some areas beginning Tuesday. Sept. 7.

“Non-migratory (resident) Canada goose populations have increase dramatically in recent years, causing crop damage and nuisance problems in residential neighborhoods,” according to a release from Chapman State Park Manager Tyson Martin. “Park visitors often complain about goose excrement on state park beaches and other facilities. Water quality at some state parks has been adversely affected, forcing swimming restrictions during peak use periods.”

“Many state parks have taken measures, including anti-goose fencing and/or the use of loud noisemakers, in attempt to deter the waterfowl or scare them away,” according to the release.

“Chapman State Park has taken measures to deter the non-migratory goose population, as many visitors complain about the excrement in and around the lake, mooring area, and various places throughout the park,” Martin said. “Waterfowl hunting can help us reduce the population and provide a cleaner environment for campers and guests to enjoy.”

Areas of the park are open to hunting in the early season from the day after Labor Day (Sept. 7) through Sept. 25.

Hunters may also take Canada geese at Chapman during the regular seasons – Oct. 23 through Nov. 26, Dec. 13 through Jan. 15, and Feb. 4 through 26.

“All Game Commission rules and regulations governing the early Canada goose season apply within state parks,” Martin said. “Persons with disabilities wanting to hunt geese in the early season should contact the park office for further information at (814) 723-0250 or chapmansp@pa.gov.
