Vaccinations are growing slowly, but surely

The vaccination numbers are growing, but slowly.

On Wednesday, the Pennsylvania Department of Health added 225 Warren County residents to the ranks of those fully vaccinated, and 17 to those who had received their first dose.

According to the latest numbers, 1,267 county residents are fully covered and 1,868 more have received one dose.

For the county’s population of a little over 39,000, that means 3.2 percent are fully covered and 4.8 percent are partially vaccinated.

Regionally, Crawford County has more than double the population of Warren County, with over 84,000 people.

According to the department, there have been far more than twice as many vaccines administered there, with 4,578 residents fully covered and 6,021 more having had one shot.

With a population of just under 30,000, Elk County also is relatively high in terms of the vaccine. There, 1,517 residents are fully covered and 3,381 more have received initial doses.

McKean County, with a population very slightly higher than Warren’s, has had 1,158 full vaccinations and another 1,551 first doses administered.

Venango County, with over 50,000 people, has had 1,110 residents fully vaccinated and 2,371 receive a first dose only.

In Forest County – population 7,300 — 202 people are fully vaccinated and 548 more are partially covered.

The number of doses per 100 population regionally:

¯ Warren County:11;

¯ Crawford: 18;

¯ Elk: 21;

¯ Erie: 9;

¯ Forest: 13;

¯ McKean: 10;

¯ Venango: 9;

¯ Pennsylvania: 10.

Full coverage would be two doses per person or 200 doses per 100 population.

State-wide, the department added about 24,000 vaccinations to its total on Wednesday.

As of the latest statistics, there had been 1,126,321 vaccines administered, with 335,291 people being fully covered having received both doses of the available vaccines.

The City of Philadelphia’s vaccination statistics are separate from the rest of the state’s.

According to its latest numbers, about 180,000 doses have been administered there.

Combining the numbers shows about 1.3 million doses have been administered in the state.

There are almost 13 million people in Pennsylvania. To get them all vaccinated using the existing two-dose vaccines would take about 26 million doses.

THREE NEW COVID CASES

There were three new cases of COVID-19 and no new COVID-related deaths in Warren County announced on Thursday.

According to information on the Pennsylvania Department of Health COVID-19 Dashboard, there have been 2,089 total cases, 1,717 confirmed and 372 probables. About 5.3 percent of the county population has or has had the virus.

There have been 95 deaths of county residents attributed to the virus. That is a rate of about 0.24 percent or 2.4 deaths per 1,000 population.

The department considers cases that do not result in death to be recovered after 30 days. There had been about 1,800 cases one month ago with about 70 of those resulting in deaths. Almost 4 percent of those who contracted the virus by mid-January died as a result of the disease. Assuming there were cases that are not among the department’s known or suspected cases, both the infection rate and the recovery rate would be higher.

At Warren General Hospital, the number of COVID-positive patients remains at four, with none on ventilators and none in intensive care.
