Cashman won’t seek another office seat

Maurice Cashman

Maurice Cashman will not be seeking another term as the City of Warren’s mayor.

Cashman was first elected to the post in 2013 and then re-elected in 2017.

He said the decision not to run again was one that he made several years ago.

“As I’ve said, I spent 16 yeras on the school board (and) 16 years with city council,” he added. “(I) will be 78-years-old at the end of December. I think it’s time to have a younger person with more vitality to move it forward.”

Cashman was first appointed to council to fill an unexpired term back in October 2005, according to a bio on the city’s website. He served on council until his election to mayor.

He retired after 23 years with the National Forge Company as well as two 2.5 years as executive director of the Struthers Library Theatre.

He’s been involved in a host of community organizations as well including Beacon Light, the WCCBI, the Lions Club as well as at St. Joseph Catholic Church.

Cashman added that he would “rather bow out at the top of my mental capacity than at the bottom.

“I just believe it’s time.”

It’s too soon to project who may be seeking the office as nominating petitions for the upcoming primary can’t be circulated for another week or so.

Council Vice President John Wortman, elected to council in 2019, said he is leaning towards running but hasn’t made a final decision.
