Fifth Ave. bridge to be closed Monday

The Fifth Avenue bridge will be closed to traffic for most of the day on Monday.

Department of Public Works Superintendent Joe Reinke told the Times Observer that the closure is a result of maintenance activities — the bridge will be coated with linseed oil.

Reinke said that the substance will be applied to all of the city’s bridges this year as a protective coating. City crews undertake the work every three years as a preventative measure.

The closure will last from roughly 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., the time needed for the oil to be absorbed by the concrete of the bridge.

The rest of the city’s bridges will be treated by DPW crews this summer as well but just when remains unclear.

Reinke said there will be a gap between this bridge and the rest because of the upcoming playground build at Lacy Park. That work is expected to start next week.
