Committee discusses Poulin statues

Sculptor Dave Poulin died a few weeks ago at the age of 59.

His death prompted a discussion at Tuesday’s City of Warren Street Landscape Committee meeting — what should the city do with five Poulin pieces currently in storage at the city’s Department of Public Works garage?

Committee member Mary Conarro raised the issue, asking if city government would consider placing the statuary in the community.

“I think he should be honored,” she said, petitioning the city to “put these sculptures in significant locations around the city such as we had in the beginning, not to keep them in one location….”

A long, winding road has resulted in the statue’s placement in storage.

Students wrote essays about the things they love to do in Warren County and the students with the best essays were the models for Poulin’s work.

Initially placed at the respective elementary schools, Department of Public Works Director Mike Holtz said the statues wound up in the office of the Main Street manager — back when the city had a Main Street program — for a couple years.

They were then split between two downtown parks — several at what is now the Art Kelsey Park on Liberty Street and a couple at Breeze Point Landing.

When the Liberty Street park was redone a couple years ago, they were moved to the garage. The plan was to place them around a healing garden at Crescent Park but that project has run into a couple funding hurdles.

Holtz acknowledged these five Poulin works “have a lot of miles on them.”

Each of the sculptures had a theme — hot chocolate girl, a fishing boy.

Conarro said placing them together at Crescent Park results in a “very limited viewing spot.”

“The core reason to put them all back together,” Holtz said, is to “give it a plaque and a story. Most people don’t even know what the heck they are (or) why they’re there. It would give them some significance.”

City Manager Nancy Freenock said she would get pictures of the statues and present them t the next committee meeting.

“We can take a look at other locations in town if you want to spread them around,” she said.
