New bail amount for Warren man accused of assault

A man facing charges including aggravated assault and failure to update sexual offender registration has new a new bail amount.

John A. Snyder, 49, of Warren, was represented in court Friday on a motion to modify bail in the sexual offender registry docket and a motion to set bail in the other docket.

Snyder was charged in October with aggravated assault; strangulation; simple assault; terroristic threats; and hindering apprehension.

In December, he was charged with two counts of failure to verify address and be photographed.

Attorney Alan Conn asked that bail in the first case, which was not set, be set to an unsecured amount, and that bail in the second case, originally set at $15,000 monetary, be set to unsecured.

He said the victim in the first case is thinking about not pursuing the charges.

“The commonwealth opposes this request (to set unsecured bail) because of the gravity of the charges,” Assistant District Attorney Tatiana Malys said. She asked that the court set bail in the first case to $50,000 secured.

“He strangled and beat up” the victim, Malys said.

She cited Snyder’s criminal record that dates back to 1989.

“These are extremely serious charges,” she said. “He has ties in Jamestown and Buffalo. I don’t think probation supervision will keep him in town.”

Malys said she believes the victim does want to move forward with prosecution. “The victim in that case is not recanting.”

Warren County President Judge Maureen Skerda set bail at $50,000 secured for the first case and left the $15,000 secured bail in place in the second.

“I do believe Mr. Snyder’s behavior indicates he is a danger at least to the victim,” she said.
