PennDOT secures funding for bridge and road maintenance

Funds are coming to help with local roads and bridges.

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has committed to $487.5 million in liquid fuel payments to help certified municipalities maintain their roads and bridges.

Warren county can expect an allocation of $2,807,466.09 this year to assist with expenses such as snow removal and road repaving.

Acting PennDOT Secretary, Yassmin Gramain said, “We have the fifth-largest state-maintained road system in the country, and there are even more locally owned roads and bridges.”

There are currently 120,596 miles of public roads in Pennsylvania, and 73,037 of those miles are owned by municipalities and eligible for liquid fuels. The payments were formulated based on a municipality’s population and miles of locally-owned roads.

The City of Warren with a population of 9,710 was allocated the most in the county and will receive $302,915.52 to use towards its roadways.

To be eligible for the liquid fuels, a roadway must be formally adopted as a public street by the municipality, along with meeting certain dimension requirements, and must be able to safely accommodate vehicles driving at least 15 m.p.h.

In 2003, Act 89 made more funding available for locally owned roadways. Before the law, municipalities received $320.8 million compared to the now $487.5 million.

According to Gramain, “These investments help keep our communities safe and connected.”
