Dept. of Revenue mulls tax deadline extension

There has been conjecture, but no word on whether the IRS will extend its April 15 income tax filing deadline.

What is not in doubt is the status of community centers, libraries, and senior centers.

With those facilities closed, the venues for the majority of Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA) services are shut down. For those who would use VITA services, but cannot due to the closures, there are some options.

VITA volunteer Greg Burkett said the IRS has a number of free, online tax preparation services.

“The IRS has 10 free tax services,” he said. All of them offer free federal income tax filing.

They have different eligibility requirements, but generally are available to those who have adjusted gross income (AGI) of less than $69,000.

The Pennsylvania Department of Revenue also offers free filing of state returns at PADirectFile.

Both online services are reached through .gov websites.

The IRS site is irs.gov and there is a button on the main page labeled ‘do your taxes for free.’

Selecting a service through the IRS site directs users away from the IRS page.

The state service is found at revenue.pa.gov. Most filers are eligible to use the state’s free filing service.

“We’re hoping that they extend the deadline,” Burkett said.
