Impeachment resolution condemned by state GOP

Democrats in the House of Representatives on Thursday set the ground rules for the ongoing impeachment inquiry against President Trump.

Unsurprisingly, the Republicans in the Pennsylvania House delegation – including Glenn Thompson – have blasted that move.

Thompson, in conjunction with seven other representatives, released a statement after the resolution setting the ground rules was approved in a party-line vote late Thursday morning with all House Republicans voting in opposition.

“House Democrats have disenfranchised millions of Americans – including about 10 million Pennsylvanians – by conducting these impeachment investigations in secret, so they can manipulate the process into their desired endgame,” the statement alleges.

They specifically attacked House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Adam Schiff, the chair of the House Intelligence Committee, claiming they “have insisted on closed-door meetings, blocking all but three of us from participating in a process they have carried out in secrecy as a means to invalidate the voice of the American people.”

“Regardless of political or personal views, the decision to impeach a sitting President is breathtakingly serious,” they say, “and all members of Congress have a right to know what is going on.”

Their comments then took a more partisan tone.

“Now, as a result of mounting pressure, House Democrats are trying to legitimize this sham at the last minute. This needs to stop. We need to get back to the business of governing the Country, end this farce and focus on what really matters.”

Thompson also took to Twitter to attack House Democrats, using the attack as an avenue of promoting the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement, the Trump Administration’s replacement agreement of NAFTA – the North American Free Trade Agreement.

“1,064,243 jobs are in the balance as long as there is no action taken on #USMCA,” Thompson tweeted. “House Republicans are ready to vote on the deal, but today, House Democrats are too busy playing politics to give those Americans peace of mind.”
