Heart’s Content hike planned for July 26

The Allegheny National Forest is providing a unique opportunity to explore the Hearts Content area – a ranger-led night hike.

ANF Public Affairs Officer Christopher Warner said on Tuesday that the event is set for Friday, July 26 from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at the Interpretive Trail Trailhead at the Hearts Content National Scenic Area.

“All ages are invited to participate in a Forest Ranger-led hike,” Warner said. “During the hike, participants will explore how to use their senses at night, even their vision.”

It’s recommended that hikers wear appropriate hiking shoes and clothing and “prepare to be wet and/or dirty depending on the weather.”

Warner said that some red-lens flashlights will be available but participants are encouraged to bring their own.

Hikers should meet at the trailhead no later than 8:20 p.m.

That trail winds through one of the only true old growth forests – dominated by centuries-old white pine and hemlock – remaining in the area.

According to a brochure for the trail, a 20-acre parcel was “protected from logging by the Wheeler and Dusenbery Lumber Company” and donated to the U.S. Forest Service in 1922.

Anyone with questions is asked to call the Bradford Ranger District Office at 814-323-6000 and ask for Ms. Lauren Bartl.

Hearts Content is located 15 miles southwest of Warren.
