Warren County Winterfest this weekend at Chapman

Construction on Chapman Dam has undoubtedly limited what Warren County Winterfest can be in 2019.

But a modified slate of activities is still on tap for this weekend at Chapman State Park.

Saturday events include a geocaching meet, presented by the Kinzua Cachers, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., and an ice safety demonstration at 1 p.m. presented by Glade Volunteer Fire Department Water Rescue.

The Pat Shine Memorial Polar Bear Plunge is set for 2 p.m. Saturday.

The Jim Lobdell Memorial Sled Dog Races include a K-9 weight pull at 1 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday at 10 a.m. as well as sled dog races from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday.

The Four-Season Trivia Quest or Quadrathlon is available on Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. while the sledding hill is open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. for open sledding.

With a heavy, winter storm bearing down on the county, park officials in a Facebook post asked those attending to “use caution when traveling to and in the park.”

Organizer Ed Atwood told the Times Observer earlier this month that the races typically attract a sizable crowd.

“For the last few years we have been the only sled dog race in the state,” Atwood said. “This year, there is one planned for the Pa. Grand Canyon.”

“The Winterfest committee could hold the event elsewhere,” Park Manager Tyson Martin said. “The park has traditionally hosted the event. The trails, parking, restrooms, and other features make it an ideal location.”

Atwood said this is an ideal time to join the Winterfest committee.

“With this being a down year as far as activities, new people have time to just learn and share ideas without jumping into too much right away,” he said.

Wes Ramsey, executive director of Penn Soil RC&D, added that “we need more involvement from the community. We want to get back to a big event next year.”
