It’s time to bundle up and dig that hideous Christmas sweater out of the back of the closet. Your fashion faux pas might even earn you an early present.

Youngsville’s Hometown Christmas is Saturday from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the borough. Just one of the highlights of the event is an ugly sweater contest.

Judges will inconspicuously roam among the crowd on Saturday looking for attire that even the Grinch wouldn’t touch with a 39-and-a-half-foot pole, according to Judy Kuzminski, organizer of the event. “People wearing the ugliest sweaters could get a gift card,” she said.

Last year was the first time Kuzminski was in charge of the event. “I got involved at the last minute so the parade wasn’t that big,” she said.

This year the parade, which kicks off at 4 p.m., will be about three times bigger than last year, Kuzminski said.

“We’re really just trying to capture that small-town, old fashioned, feel-good spirit of the holidays,” Kuzminski said. “We feel it’s important to keep the event going, especially for the kids.”

There will be lots to do for kids and kids at heart, according to Kuzminski.

There is a Christmas walk through town that includes at least eight different scenes, some from popular holiday movies. A live nativity will also take place.

If your Christmas tree is a looking a little bit Charlie-Brownish, the kids can make some ornaments to perk it right back up.

Amateur architects may want to enter an edible masterpiece in the Gingerbread House Contest. If you’re hungry, you needn’t be naughty by stealing gumdrops from the contest entries. There will be plenty of cookies, hot chocolate and food vendors, according to Kuzminski.

Musical entertainment will take place throughout the evening and craft vendors will sell their wares.

There are some sweet prizes to win during the festival, but you’ll want to arrive early. “We are having a cash raffle to help fund the festival,” Kuzminski said. “$1,100 in cash prizes will be given away. Tickets will be available until 4:30 at the festival. They are $10 each.”

Last, but certainly not least, the man of the season will make an appearance. Yes, if you haven’t sent your wish list to the North Pole yet, don’t pout or cry. You can tell him in person what you’re hoping for because Santa Claus is coming to town.
