Casey defeats Republican Barletta in US Senate race

Pennsylvania’s senior senator – Democrat Bob Casey – has been re-elected to a third term.

He defeated Republican Lou Barletta as a result of Tuesday’s General Election.

While Barletta lost state-wide, it’s not surprising that he won 61-37 percent over Casey in Warren County – 8,370 to 5,081 votes.

The Green Party’s Neal Gale notched 91 votes while Dale R. Kearns, Jr., the Libertarian candidate, secured 143 votes.

As in the governor’s race, the margin of victory for Barletta in Warren County was less than 100 votes in the City of Warren but just under 5,000 votes throughout the rest of the county.

The Associated Press reported that Barletta never gained traction against Casey, and was heavily outspent while getting virtually no outside help from GOP groups to overcome Casey’s heavy fundraising advantage and built-in recognition as a household name in Pennsylvania politics.

Barletta said he called Casey to congratulate him and hoped Casey would “work with President Trump for the good of the American people. I’m sure he will.” He said Casey would “serve the people of Pennsylvania as he always has,” according to the Associated Press. Trump asked Barletta to run, and Barletta campaigned on Trump’s policies and record, particularly immigration, where their views dovetailed.

But, the Associated Press noted, Barletta failed to reconstruct the coalition of Republicans and conservative Democrats that had helped Trump become the first Republican presidential candidate to win Pennsylvania since 1988.

State-wide results as of press time from the Pa. Department of State indicate that Casey had received almost 2.6 million votes good for 55.74 percent with 98.07 percent of precincts reporting while Barletta had received 1.98 million votes good for 42.62 percent.

For a seat in the House of Representatives, incumbent Republican Rep. Glenn Thompson cruised to victory over Democratic challenger Susan Boser in the newly-minted 15th Congressional District.

Warren County-wide, Thompson took 67.3 percent while Boser took 32.7 of votes cast.

While there was a stark county vs. city split in the races for senator and governor, Thompson took 57 percent in the city and 71 percent in the rest of the county.

This will be Thompson’s sixth term in the House of Representatives.

According to a report from KDKA, Democratic challenger Ron DiNicola conceded to incumbent Republican Mike Kelly in the newly-crafted 16th Congressional District.
