Sugar Grove man faces aggravated assault charges

Edward Charles Thornton, 39, of Sugar Grove, faces felony aggravated assault charges today stemming from an incident Monday evening that left one man bleeding and required two state troopers to control.

According to the affidavit of probable cause, officers were dispatched to 212 Main Street in Sheffield Monday at approximately 9:35 p.m. after a 911 hang up call was received from that address. Warren County Control reported to state police that yelling and pounding was heard on the line before the call went dead.

Upon arrival, troopers report that the front door of the residence was open and two males were inside wrestling on the floor. After separating the men, the affidavit states, the victim and owner of the residence told police that Thornton “just showed up with a half gallon of Crown Royal” around 3:45 that afternoon and began drinking.

The victim told police that Thornton drank the entire bottle of liquor by himself before beginning to throw things around the house. When told to stop, Thornton reportedly attacked the victim, hitting him in the face multiple times and biting him in the left thumb and elbow, breaking the skin.

After being handcuffed by officers, the affidavit states, Thornton continued to scream obscenities, saying that he was “going to kill” the troopers responding to the incident. Thornton also attempted to kick both troopers’ legs out while he was laying on the ground.

Two more troopers arrived on scene to assist the responding officers and Thornton was then shackled and transported to Warren General hospital to be medically cleared, according to the affidavit.

Online court records show that Thornton is being held in the Warren County Jail on charges of aggravated assault, simple assault, and harassment. His bail was set at $50,000. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for Sept. 6 at 11 a.m.
