This game ended up with the 73-74 team beating the 77-78 team by a score of 40-22.

During half time of the games the Sports Boosters recognized some important people who have each played an instrumental role in shaping the landscape of Sheffield athletics. It’s an impossible task to fully describe the amount of time, commitment and sacrifice these folks have put forth through the years to better our sports program at Sheffield. The late nights, the traveling schedule, the weekend games and practices, and most of all the time away from their own family and friends, all for the opportunity to teach, to educate, to coach our student-athletes at SHS: Coach Lee Goldthwaite, Coach Dave Steffan, Coach Tom Dunn and the man who brought back the sweater vest…Coach Todd Fitch were each given a plaque in appreciate for all their years of coaching.

Coach Todd Fitch, a 1982 graduate of Sheffield High School and multiple sport athlete himself, began his coaching career at Sheffield in 1989 with the junior high basketball program where he remained until 2007 when Coach Fitch was named the varsity boys’ basketball coach at SHS. He continued on as head boys’ basketball coach until the end of his 25th year in 2013 when Coach Fitch decided to put away the clipboard. Through his 25 years at Sheffield, Todd also spent a couple years coaching the girls’ JV basketball program. Coach Fitch’s ability to instill his knowledge of the game into his players and demand the best out of each individual was instrumental in the success of Wolverine basketball through the last 25 years. Todd has been married to his wife Kim Fitch for 25 years. They have three children Tyler, Emily, and Craig, all graduates of Sheffield High themselves.

Tom Dunn is a 1957 graduate of Sheffield High School. During his high school career, Dunn participated in football and basketball and was 4-year letter winner and also was selected to the AML all-star team for three consecutive years. Upon graduating, Dunn became an educator and began his teaching career at Youngsville starting in 1963 where he remained for 11 years and coached football for 3 years. After those 11 years Dunn decided to bring his teaching skills and rare ability to draw a perfect circleto Sheffield where he taught for the next 29 years and coached football for 22 years and track for 30 years. It was through those 29 years that Dunn coached both football and track, coaching and working with many of the people standing in this gymnasium, mothers, fathers, sons, and daughters. Dunn has been married to his wife Jean for 52 years and they will be celebrating their 53rd anniversary this upcoming September. Dunn has two children, Robin who is a 1980 graduate of Sheffield High, and Tom, a 1985 graduate of Sheffield.

Coach Lee Goldthwaite is a 1962 graduate of Sheffield High School. He himself played JV and Varsity basketball for Sheffield from 1960-1962. Coach Goldthwaite began his coaching career by coaching the 9th grade boys’ basketball team for 2 years until he was named boys junior varsity coach and assistant boys’ varsity basketball coach. Coach Goldthwaite remained in these positions for the next 21 years where he amassed 313 JV wins and helped guide the varsity team to numerous playoff appearances and twenty-plus win seasons, all of which helped earn himself a spot in the Warren County Sports Hall of Fame. In 2005 Lee became girls’ varsity basketball coach and remained in that position until 2009. Lee also coached girls’ softball for 18 years where his teams won a total 4 TCAC championships. Lee is husband to Rita Goldthwaite for 47 years and counting. They have two children together Mark and Melissa and 3 grandchildren Ryan, Rachel, and Lyndsey.

Coach Dave Steffan is a 1974 graduate of Sheffield High School. While in high school Coach Steffan played varsity basketball where he helped lead his teams to numerous wins and playoff appearances as well as becoming one of the top 10 scorers all-time in Sheffield basketball history. After high school, Coach Steffan went on to play college basketball 2 years at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford and 2 years at Fredonia State, in which he received many distinguishing awards and honors at the college level. Dave became head boys basketball coach where he led multiple teams to 20+ win seasons, league championships, district championships and PIAA state playoff appearances as well as accumulating over 300 wins. Coach Steffan’s teams reached the playoffs in all but 2 of his 23 years as head coach. These accomplishments, along with his personal accomplishments as a player, have landed Coach Steffan in the Warren County Sports Hall of Fame. Coach Steffan has been married to his wife Shelley for 31 years, and will make it 32 this month. They have three children together, Ryan, Shawna, and Kayla who all attended Sheffield High School.

Also receiving recognition were the alumni from Sheffield Area Junior/Senior High School who were Collegian Honor Athletes, Vincent Werner, Danny Petchel and Steven Eisenhower. Pictures of each of these individuals will hang in the Ralph G. Santo gymnasium.

Kalil Slaughter and Matt Benson were honored for their outstanding PI AA State Track and Field records that they set during their sports career at Sheffield Area Middle Senior High School. Each of these outstanding athletes will have a banner placed in the Ralph G. Santo gymnasium recognizing their accomplishments during the State track meet.

In 1991 Matt Benson high jumped 6’8″ for a state record and in 1992 he high jumped 7’1″ for another state record that still stands today. Kalil Slaughter in 2012 ran the 100M in 10.85 and the 200M 21.78 for a state record.

The Sports Boosters wish to thank all who attended along with those individuals and sponsors who helped out in one way or another. This event was a huge success and a great time.

KCH Evacuation

Drill Held

Last week, during Emergency Medical Services Week, the Kane Volunteer Fire Department, Boy Scout Troop 427, and Kane Community Hospital conducted an emergency evacuation exercise.

Wayne Steele, KCH emergency preparedness coordinator, and Tim Holt, chief of Kane Volunteer Fire Department, met in late April to devise the scenario. In this worst case scenario, the fire department was forced to use strictly manpower to evacuate the upper floors of the hospital.

The drill scenario for the exercise was a direct lightning strike at the hospital, which destroyed the electrical system as well as the back-up generator system. Without electricity, the elevators are inoperable and there is no lighting. This required the firefighters to use “stokes baskets” to move members of the Boy Scout troop from the first floor patient treatment area to the ground floor lobby area. This is the first exercise of this type that any of the firefighters could remember doing at the hospital.

With narrow stairwells and multiple flights of steps, it took four firefighters per basket to safely extricate each patient. The firefighters quickly learned a system to efficiently evacuate with minimal interruption.

Both the Kane Volunteer Fire Department and KCH continually revise and create policies and plans for continuous preparation aimed at keeping the community safe in times of disaster and disruption.

Sheffield Township

Library

Anyone interested in working part time at the library is asked to pick up an application at the township office Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. or during the hours of the library which are Monday from 6 to 8 p.m., Tuesday 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Wednesday 2 to 8 p.m., Thursday and Friday from 1 to 5 p.m., and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The library needs a part-time librarian to work 18 hours a month for 2 hours on Mondays and 2 hours on Tuesdays. Anyone interested, get an application and turn it into the township supervisors.

Coordinator Attends

Federal Training

Healthcare professionals across Pennsylvania are better prepared to respond to major natural or manmade disasters following an intensive, week-long training at the federal Center for Domestic Preparedness (CDP) in Anniston, Ala. The CDP is operated by the U.S. Department of Homeland Secruity’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and is the only federally-chartered Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) training facility in the nation.

One hundred forty-three professionals from public health entities, Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and hospitals attended the training last month. Kane Community Hospital’s Wayne Steele, LPN, Emergency Department, EMT-B and KCH disaster preparedness coordinator, participated in the training.

“The Pennsylvania contingent was the largest group ever to complete this training,” Acting Secretary of Health Michael Wolf said. “The Federal Emergency Management Agency worked very closely with us to customize the exercise specifically for our needs, providing our designated professionals with tailored preparedness tools and experience.” The week culminated with the participants coming together for Integrated Capstone Event (ICE) training, an all-hazards exercise that focuses on emergency response to a catastrophic natural disaster or terrorist act. Specifically, the “Penny” ICE scenario involved a small domestic terrorist organization carrying out multiple attacks on a fictional city, resulting in more than 300 injured people needing immediate triage and treatment.

“When I was notified of this training and the approach that was used in developing it, I realized it would be a great experience for both training and networking,” said Steele. “This particular training session was limited to healthcare workers from Pennsylvania. Dr. Russell Bieniek, MD, a UPMC Hamot Emergency Department physician at Kane Community Hospital, also attended this training. John Weidow and Robbin Cessna from EMMCO East Regional Council also participated. EMMCO East Region supports a quality emergency health care system within every service area of the region, and serves as a resource to the Pennsylvania Department of Health Bureau of EMS in carrying out the EMS Act, the Comprehensive Regional EMS Development Plan, and DOH regulations and policies. Kane Community Hospital is represented by the EMMCO East Regional Council.

“The FEMA Center for Disaster Preparedness training is second to none. The exercise was based in a vacant military hospital. This was one of the most valuable tools in the training. To use an actual hospital for training and not disrupt anyone made the experience very realistic,” Steele noted. “The professional instructors come from all over the country to share their knowledge and experience. One instructor in particular was an ER physician on duty at a Manhattan hospital on 9/11/2001. He was able to share his experience and provide insight on what worked and what failed.”

Alumni Basketball

Game

The Sheffield Sports Boosters would like to invite everyone back to school to participate in what is hoped to be a most memorable, fun-filled, community event. In years past the Varsity Club and the Technology Club of Sheffield High School have held annual basketball games which would pit faculty against the senior class.

This year, on June 1, we will hold two charity basketball games to help raise money for Sheffield athletics. First, the night will kick off with the Sheffield/Clarendon/Cherry Grove VFDs vs. Local Law Enforcement. The second game will feature the 1973-74 Boys JV/Varsity basketball team vs. the 1977-78 Boys JV/Varsity Basketball Team.

It was 15 years ago this past March that Sheffield last held an alumni game (Class of ’65 vs. Class of ’69). As it turned out, the gymnasium was nearly standing room only and many members of the community and their respective teams participated. We hope that there will be as many original participants, if not more, than there were 15 years ago. We also hope there will be as many lasting memories and enjoyable moments as we try to “keep the Wolverine spirit alive.”
