Hometown Heroes

Overview

The Warren County Hometown Heroes Project is being supported by the Warren County Veterans’ Affairs, the Youngsville Borough, the Youngsville Public Library, the Warren County Commissioners, Warren County Historical Society and the Warren County Visitor’s Bureau. The project is designed to pay tribute to the contributions and sacrifices of Warren County veterans from as far back as the Revolutionary War up to the present war in Iraq and Afghanistan and those serving here at home and abroad.

The program calls for street banners to be displayed on street lights throughout our Warren County communities. Having the banners up from Memorial Day to Veterans Day would allow for Christmas banners and decoration to go up. This would also extend the life of the banners. Each 24″ x 48″ banner will be printed on both sides of a heavy vinyl/polyester with UV protection, and will honor a specific Warren County service person. The banner will include his/her photo, name, branch of service, era of service, and hometown. The donors name will also appear on the bottom. Special brackets will be used to secure the banners to street lights and/or utility poles.

This project is a great opportunity for every citizen of Warren County to work together toward a common goal-to become one community.

This project is non-political and non-partisan; it is purely a living memorial to those service men and women from Warren County who served or are serving our country.

This first round of the project will begin May 30 through July 30 and will be unveiled on Memorial Day 2017. Photo release and sponsorship forms are available at the Youngsville Public Library, Northwest Bank, and the borough office in Youngsville. If you or the family cannot afford to pay for the banner you may petition the committee to find a possible funding source.

Sponsorship benefits include: Sponsor’s name on each banner purchased, listing in Hometown Hero celebration book, identified as a sponsor in all promotional material and media information, an invitation to participate in the Hometown Hero celebration in the spring, and a copy of the Hometown Hero Celebration Program Book, sponsorships are estimated at $200 including the brackets. Communities can combine orders for a better price.

Is your Warren County community ready to start the HHBP? For that information, or to apply for a banner, or to sponsor a banner: Joanne Oviatt email: knjoviatt@verizon.net 814-563-4286, Hometown Heroes Coordinator for ROY, PO Box 330, Youngsville, PA 16340.

Library News

Whether you’re a fan of westerns, suspense/thrillers, romance, inspirational fiction, or another genre Youngsville Public Library has something for you. Each month YPL adds new titles to its print and DVD collections for children, teens, and adults. YPL also has a collection of large-print titles.

Some of the most recently added titles include: “Family Jewels” by Stuart Woods, “Find Her” by Lisa Gardner, and “Trail of the Mountain Men” by William Johnstone. Thanks to the donations of our patrons, YPL also has an extensive magazine collection, over 80 different titles, that cover a broad range of topics from cooking to hunting to family fun activities. Regular business hours are Mon and Tu. Noon-7:30, Wed. 10-5, and Fri Noon-4.

Special Library Hours

On Wednesday, May 18, the day of the WarrenGives Event, Youngsville Public Library will be open special hours (8 am – 8pm). Friends of the Youngsville Public Library will be available to assist members of the public with any online donation questions pertaining to the WarrenGives site. No appointment is necessary to take advantage of the WarrenGives Event Day help at YPL. General public internet access, faxing, check-outs, and other regular library services will also be available during the extended hours.

According to Library Director Kristy Wallace, Youngsville Public Library is eligible for WarrenGives donations but that is not the reason why YPL offers extended hours on the WarrenGives date. “Youngsville Library has been open during a special 12-hour window since the very first year WarrenGives was started because we realize how important it is for the public to have computer access during as much of this event as feasible,” said Library Director Kristy Wallace. “It’s surprising how many people automatically assume that almost everybody in our county has easy access to the internet -but that definitely isn’t the case (as evidenced by our annual public-internet/ computer use numbers, which are always very high). Each year we are visited by people who are either first time donors, who appreciate the one-on-one help option, or are previous donors who don’t have a home computer so they need to utilize what we have to offer. Members of our board and Friends organization are available for assistance, if needed, and we always have at least one computer available just for WarrenGives donors to use to insure that people don’t have to wait to donate.”

Brokenstraw Valley

Fund is WarrenGives

eligible

Are you familiar with the Brokenstraw Valley Fund? Did you know that the Brokenstraw Valley Fund (BVF) is eligible for WarrenGives donations and that your gift will be a part of a legacy that will enable the BVF to grow and serve the future needs, dreams, and goals of our Brokenstraw Valley community? When you think of BVF, think longevity, think legacy, think possibilities, and most of all think “Foundation for the Future of Our Area .”

The mission of the Brokenstraw Valley Fund (BVF) is to maintain a foundation that will be able to assist non-profit organizations in our Brokenstraw Valley Area with community-minded projects and improvements in the same spirit that the Community Foundation of Warren County (CFWC) does.

The Brokenstraw Valley Fund may be in its infancy but it is here to stay. As a matter of fact the Brokenstraw Valley Fund (BVF) was created in collaboration with the Community Foundation of Warren County as a “subset” fund under the CFWC which means that the BVF follows the same guidelines as the Community Foundation of Warren County (CFWC). Like the CFWC, the goal of the Brokenstraw Valley Fund is to only distribute grants from the interest earned by its principal- the fund principal will remain untouched to compound. Building momentum by building a foundation’s principal has been done before and it can happen again- with the monetary support of our community members.

The current goals/needs for the Brokenstraw Valley Fund are few but very important: (1) Raise at least $25,000 (for principal/investment capital) by May 31, 2016; BVF is well on its way to meeting this goal, but we still need your support during WarrenGives on May 18 to reach this goal, (2) The CFWC, in a separate offer, has pledged to match the amount raised by BVF (by May 31) dollar for dollar- up to $25,000 (which means that if the BVF reaches $25,000, with your help, by May 31 that BVF’s initial investment principal will instantly become $50,000 thanks to CFWC’s generosity and belief in the potential of the Brokenstraw Valley Foundation, and (3) In its initial stages, the BVF intends to grow its principal market value to a level that will generate sufficient interest to that interest only will be distributed (in grant form). Visit our website at OurBVF.org for more information.
