Baby Arch Project

Tidioute borough council received a letter of request for funding for a “Baby Arch Project” monument to be erected at the Warren County Visitors Center in memory of retired boilermakers.

The committee of Retired Boilermakers is looking for assistance with raising funds for the recognition of the men who worked for the Pittsburgh Des Moines Steel Plant in Warren, Pennsylvania, more commonly known as PDM. These men were responsible for welding, cutting and fabricating the pieces that became the Gateway Arch in St. Louis, Missouri.

As recommended in a tourism study done by consultant Gary Esolen of PLACES in 2007, it is their wish to build and place a miniature replica of the famous Gateway Arch at the PA Visitors’ Center located in Starbrick. There goal is to have this “Baby Arch” project completed with everything set up at the Visitors Center by the end of this year.

Per borough code, Tidioute Borough can not use taxpayers dollars for this. However, if anyone else would like to donate to this great idea they can send their monetary donations to Committee of Boilermakers, in care of Walt Atwood, 694 Mohawk Avenue, Warren, PA. 16365.

WWII reenactment committee members met on Wednesday, April 27 to discuss the upcoming reenactment set for Saturday, Aug. 6 at 3 p.m. Committee members will be selling t-shirts and hats this year. They will be honoring the WWII veterans again this year. As in the past, there will be special seating area for all of our veterans under a tent. It was suggested that the business owners put a sign outside of their businesses with the name of their business in German. A huge request that there be no drones at the reenactment due to liability and the possibility that a drone could get caught up in the explosions and the reenactors will not be watching out for drones and delaying any of their activities due to drones. Drones like helicopters were not available during WWII so please respect the reenactors and our veterans. Also, spectators are to stay behind the roped areas even after the reenactors have passed by you as there was no one walking behind the soldiers during the real war and it takes away from the meaning when there are people following inside the roped areas.

The next reenactment meeting is Wednesday, June 1 at 6:30 p.m. at the borough office.
