Man involved in NY manhunt wanted on attempted homicide charge in Pa.

James Gnacinski

The subject of a successful multi-agency manhunt this week in Chautauqua County had been wanted for attempted homicide in Pennsylvania.

James D. Gnacinski, 39, of Erie, was taken into custody without incident Thursday afternoon after a burglary incident was reported at a hunting cabin on Route 394 in the town of Westfield. The incident prompted a “shelter in place” alert Wednesday evening.

Gnacinski is charged in Pennsylvania with attempted homicide, two counts of aggravated assault, burglary — bodily injury crime, criminal trespass, intimidation of victim, terroristic threats, and two counts of simple assault for an incident that occurred earlier in the month. He is currently in Chautauqua County Jail.

The Pennsylvania man is expected to face burglary charges out of Chautauqua County, Sheriff James Quattrone said.

According to an affidavit of probable cause, police in Girard, Pa., responded to a reported domestic situation involving a box cutter at 3:26 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 20. A woman told police that Gnacinski, with whom she previously had a relationship, had used a ladder to enter her home through a bedroom window while she slept.

She told officers that she woke up to Gnacinski, wearing gloves, on top of her, with a box cutter against her throat.

He told her to “get your keys, we are leaving,” according to the affidavit, then grabbed her by the hair and dragged her to the kitchen.

Gnacinski reportedly told her “you can die in the house and your son can find you or we can go downstairs,” according to the affidavit, and that he struck her several times in the face and said, “You don’t get to say anything.”
