Leadership Warren is now accepting applications

Leadership Warren County is a program that works to increase the knowledge and experience of civic-minded county residents.

“We look for people who want to learn more about the community and be involved and give back,” Director Lacey Hanson said. “It’s also about meeting other leaders, networking, and establishing relationships.”

On Wednesday, the group of 12 students heard from representatives of the media – including the Times Observer. During their one-hour panel discussion with Times Observer reporters Josh Cotton and Brian Ferry, the students heard information from how to submit news and photos, why some things are covered the way they are, and some of the more interesting stories the reporters had covered.

The nine-month Leadership Warren County curriculum includes retreats, skills development, community impact projects, and community awareness sessions — like Wednesday’s.

In addition to media, the class members are exposed to government, health care, banking, insurance, education, utilities, and more.

Class member Renee Haight said she interested in the process that went into turning an underutilized manufacturing building into a popular line of shops including Allegheny Outfitters, Bent Run Brewing, the Goat Fort Indoor Climbing, and PennWild Outdoors – “how they turned that warehouse into amazing stores and how quickly they got those businesses running.”

Class member Rose Clarke said the class is helping her put the various systems of the county into context. “I’m learning a lot and meeting people,” she said.

Like Clarke, class member Megan Johnson came to Warren County from New York State. They are both learning the systems of a new state while they learn about their community.

The group still has tours of Ellwood National Forge, the Warren County Career Center, and a number of different farms and agriculture endeavors, as well as a trip to Chautauqua Institution on its agenda, Hanson said.

The application period for the next class is open. Applications are available by visiting leadershipwarrencounty.org and may be returned to Hanson at director@leadershipwarrencounty.org or at the Warren County Chamber of Business and Industry at 308 Market St., Warren.
