VITA TAX PREP

Cherry McIntyre, local site coordinator for Volunteer Tax Income Assistance program, led a lengthy discussion with fellow volunteer tax preparers on how to complete the tax season with COVID-19. It will take the cooperation of the VITA tax volunteers, as well as, cooperation and patience from people participating in the program in order to produce this free service safely.

COVID-19 might be transferred via the paperwork submitted, so procedures have been put in place to prevent transferring COVID-19 to the tax preparation volunteers and staff at the Allegheny Community Center. Due to the serious nature of COVID, no exceptions can be made.

¯ At the Allegheny Community Center, can pick up a Tax Intake Form and an envelope to return the taxes to the preparer.

There will be a table in the ground floor lobby area closest to the rear entrance beginning Jan. 21. Park in the back parking lot and come up the ramp.

Take the envelope and in-take form home and complete all the information required. Please make sure to include all of the required paper work. The lack of required documents will further delay taxes being completed.

¯ No taxes will be completed without a copy of Social Security cards of every family member living with the tax filer. The senior centers are not making copies of these or any other documents at this time because they are closed to the public.

¯ Return the completed Tax Intake Form, copies of Social Security cards and relevant tax documents in the envelope provided. Packets can be dropped off Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. or mailed to the ACC, 42 Clark St., Warren, PA 16365. Taxes will be sealed, boxed and stored in a locked room for five days in order to mitigate COVID-19 transference.

At the end of the quarantine filers will be contacted by phone by a VITA volunteer who will check the Tax Intake Form and corresponding paperwork. Once the taxes are completed, they are again sealed and boxed for five days for your safety. The staff at the ACC will call filers to come and pick up their completed taxes.

VITA tax service is a program that many community members have come to rely on.

Tax Intake Forms and envelopes will not be available until Jan. 21, when they will be in the downstairs, rear entrance lobby of the Allegheny Community Center.

For more information, call 723-4180.
