ANF Selling Personal Use Firewood Permits

The Allegheny National Forest is selling firewood permits.

The 2021 Personal Use Firewood Permits are on sale. The cost starts at $20 for up to four cords and goes up $5 per cord up to $50 for ten cords.

There are restrictions about which trees may be cut.

“You may cut a standing tree if 25 percent or more of the bark is missing and there are no indications that it is marked for timber use or has any wildlife living in it,” according to an ANF release.

The 25 percent rule also applies to any tree that is already on the ground.

No standing, timber-quality tree may be cut. “This is strictly prohibited and monitored,” according to the release.

Only trees along Forest Service roads may be cut.

“Wood permit holders will get an in-depth rules briefing and a map when they purchase their permit,” according to the release.

Those cutting on the ANF must have their permits with them.

Permits are valid from Oct. 1 through Sept. 30 of the following year.

Firewood permit applications may be found at https://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/stelprd3836392.pdf.

Completed application forms and payment – check or money order payable to USDA-Forest Service – are only accepted by mail to one of the following Allegheny National Forest offices – Supervisor’s Office, 4 Farm Colony Drive, Warren, PA 16365; Bradford Ranger District, 29 Forest Service Drive, Bradford, PA 16701; or Marienville Ranger District, 131 Smokey Lane, Marienville, PA 16239.
