Youngsville Life

YHS Class Lunch cancelled: The annual YHS Alumni July Luncheon for those classes 50 and over has been canceled for this year. Due to the vulnerable age factor of the alumni and the fairly large attendance that is normal for this luncheon, the hosting Class of 1968 has decided to cancel the event during this COVID-19 crisis. The normal buffet-type, dish-to-share luncheon would not conform to CDC guidance. The Class of 1968 will instead host next year’s luncheon honoring both the Class of 1969 and the Class of 1970, on Tuesday, July 13, 2021.

YHS Alumni Scholarships Awarded: The Youngsville High School Alumni Scholarship Board of Trustees is pleased to announce that nine YHS Seniors have been selected to receive the 2020 Alumni Scholarships. The scholarships are a one-time award of $2,200, which will be paid after successful completion of the first semester of college or technical school. Students receiving the award are: Gabrielle Bojaczko, daughter of Michael and Angie Bojaczko, attending Great Lakes Institute of Technology; Annika Chase, daughter of Josh and Mandy Chase, attending Jamestown Community College; Riley Heeden, son of Mark Heeden and Lauren Tuning, attending Mercyhurst University; Gage Hendrickson, son of Brian and Carrie Hendrickson, attending Westminster College; Faith Johnson, daughter of Dale and Kellie Johnson, attending Slippery Rock University; Drake Ketcham, son of Jeffery and Meredith Ketcham, attending University of Pittsburgh Johnstown; Anne Schwanke, daughter of David and Nancy Schwanke, attending Pace University; Mallory Sherrard, daughter of Robert and Tammie Sherrard, attending Jamestown Community College; and Samatha Wilson, daughter of Matt Tower and Tammy Greenland, attending Waynesburg University. Congratulations to these Seniors and all of the Youngsville High School Class of 2020.

Borough Updates

BSVP Scrap Metal Collection Day: The Friends of the BVSP will be collecting scrap metal during the Youngsville Borough Clean Up Day on Saturday, June 27, from 8 a.m. to noon. Metal items only please. Freon must be drained from all appliances. No televisions, glass or electronics are accepted. Also only propane tanks with the valve removed and hole exposed will be accepted. The scrap metal collection will also take place at the borough building parking lot, 40 Railroad St., and identification is required. Contact the borough office with questions about spring clean-up details at 563-4604.

Boro office hours: The borough office is now open to the public during regular business hours. Members of the public must wear appropriate masks upon entry to the building, in an effort to protect staff and limit human contact as instructed by the CDC and the Pennsylvania Department of Health. The Youngsville Borough office also continues to be open by phone, email and through the drop box to the right of the front doors. Call the borough at 814-563-4604. Staff extensions are Kim Hall, ext. 4, Jolean Ishman, ext. 3, Mark Theuret, ext. 1, and Lisa Hagberg, ext. 2.

Youngsville Library Update

Curbside pickup available: Youngsville Public Library has been offering “contactless, curbside pickup” since June 1. There are three ways to make a request for materials:

¯ Download a “YPL Materials Request form” at YoungsvilleLibrary.org and place completed form in the library drop-box,

¯ Get a copy of the form on the outside of the library’s main doors at any time and place it in the library drop box, and

¯ Make e-requests through quick links on the library website, YoungsvilleLibrary.org, or call the library and speak directly to a staff member Mondays and Wednesdays from noon to 6 p.m. and Fridays from noon to 4 p.m. Once a request has been filled, the borrower will be contacted by a staff member and provided with a curbside pickup time and date. Due to staffing limitations, strict material quarantining timeframes, item availability, and other factors your requests will not be ready the same day they are made, but library officials will do their best to maintain a quick turnaround from request to pick up.

Patrons can view the Youngsville Library materials catalog online as well. Library officials ask patrons limit their requests for materials to five items per form. To speak with library staff about renewals, curbside pickup procedures, and other questions call the Youngsville Library at 563-7670 Monday and Wednesday from noon to 6 p.m. and Friday from noon to 4 p.m. Curbside pickup hours will be scheduled by appointment on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. See our FAQ page on our website for more details.

Free “Contactless Summer Snack” Program: This will be the fifth year that the Youngsville Public Library has been a site for the Free Summer Snack Program. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the library must modify its snack program for 2020 for health and safety reasons. Brown lunch sacks containing an individually packed snack of juice and crackers (i.e. goldfish crackers) will be placed outside the library’s front door in a labeled tote from 1 to 4 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. The program will start Monday, June 15, and end on Monday, Aug. 31. Persons ages 18 and under are encouraged to take one “snack bag” per person on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

“Our library knows how important it is to provide snacks to the youth in our area each summer and we wanted to try to find a solution for this year that still meets the strict restrictions libraries have to follow due to COVID-19,” said Library Director Kristy Wallace. “Last summer, our library provided well over 250 free snacks to kids within a six week time frame. There is no registration required for this program; the goal is to make sure that kids in our area have an opportunity to receive a free, healthy snack during the summer. This year we’ve extended the time we are serving snacks to eleven weeks, so we are expecting a lot more participation. I will be the person in charge of placing the factory-wrapped/sealed items in each snack bag and will of course be following strict health and safety guidelines -like wearing gloves and a mask- when assembling the snack bags.”

For more information about the Free Summer Snack Program visit: YoungsvilleLibrary.org or call the library 563-7670.

Mail-in & Absentee Ballots: If you have questions about how to apply for a mail-in or absentee ballot for the November election, it is not too early to apply. Visit YoungsvilleLibrary.org to learn about mail ballot deadlines and procedures, how to apply for a mail-in ballot (with a quick link to an online registration form) and more.

Love your Library Raffle Winners: “The Friends of the Youngsville Public Library, Board, and I want to thank everyone who ‘took a chance’ on YPL’s 10th Annual Love-Your-Library Raffle Extravaganza Fundraiser this year, we really appreciate it,” Wallace said. “Now that public libraries are allowed to offer curbside pickup services, our library has been able to make arrangements for the winners to pick up their cash, gift cards, or tickets “contactless and curbside” as well. We want to also thank everyone for their patience regarding the drawing date which had to be postponed due to COVID-19 restrictions. The mandated closing of businesses that were “ticket sites” also proved a bit problematic and we wanted to be sure that ALL the raffle chances were collected so that everyone who took a chance was properly represented and that all the tickets were collected. There were 6 themed options to choose each worth a minimum of $100 in gift cards, cash, and/or scratch-off tickets. Since this is a major annual fundraiser for Youngsville Public Library, we truly are appreciative of all the area businesses who donated toward the gift cards and cash prizes. We really wouldn’t have been able to offer such great prizes without local and area business support. It is our hope that the supporting businesses will also benefit by acquiring new customers.”

Businesses that donated to the library’s 10th annual giveaway were: Applebee’s, Carter Lumber, Forester Restaurant, Kwik Fill, Olewine Financial Group (in Warren), Richard’s Restaurant, Sheetz, Simple Dick’s Outlet City, Tammy’s Hairitage, Tops’ Markets (one of the $25 cards), and Wal-Mart (one of the $25 cards). The rest of the gift card, cash, and lottery tickets were paid for by the Friends of YPLibrary.

Winners were: (1) Richard Sullivan – “Bon-Appetite” $25 Forest, $25 Wal-Mart (sponsored by Friends of YPL), $25 Tops, & $20 Applebee’s; (2) Tara Tichenor- “Youngsville’s Finest”: $20 Simple Dicks, $25 cash (sponsored by Friends of YPL), $30 tammy’s Hairitage, $20 Richard’s Restaurant, & $25 Tops Market; (3) Cindy Reasbeck- “Keep on Scratchin”: $100 worth of scratch off tickets (sponsored by Friends of YPL); (4) Lois Chido — “Cold Cash”: $100 bill sponsored by (Scott) Olewine Financial Group, in Warren; (5) Betsy Griffin- “Fill ‘er Up”: $25 Sheetz gas card, $50 Kwik fill cards, & $50 Country Fair gas card (sponsored by Friends of YPL); and (6) Rebecca Hagg- “Got Ya Covered”: $100 Carter Lumber and $25 Wal-Mart. All proceeds directly benefit the Youngsville Public Library.
