Breath of fresh air: YMCA hosting free outdoor workouts

The Warren County YMCA is hoping to get people moving again.

Partnering with the Warren Sports Boosters, the Y will be providing free outdoor workouts to the community at War Memorial Field starting Monday, May 11.

With Warren County moving into the yellow phase to re-open businesses after COVID-19 closures, six foot social distancing rules will still be in effect even outside.

“We are hoping that the fresh air and exercise will boost people’s health not only physically, but mentally and emotionally as well,” said YMCA Wellness Director, Chris Dolan.

The goal is to also encourage family time.

“It’s also important for kids to see their parents being active, and families are welcomed to take advantage of the open times and get healthy together,” Dolan added.

The idea began about a month ago, hoping to get people moving again on a regular schedule when it was safe to come out of quarantine.

“I’d really like to thank the Warren Sports Boosters group for allowing us to host open exercise times at War Memorial Field. It’s great when the Y can collaborate with local organizations that have the best interests of our community members in mind,” Dolan said.

The workouts will be held at various times throughout the week.

The schedule is as follows: Monday, Wednesday, and Friday — 9 to 10 a.m., open track (walking and running only); 10 a.m. to noon, family “fun”ctional fitness, and 5 to 7 p.m., family “fun”ctional fitness; Tuesday and Thursday — 9 a.m. to noon and 5 to 7 p.m., open track and strength workout (handout available).

There is no cost to attend and all members of the community are welcome to participate.

Kindly wear walking or running shoes as no boots or spikes of any kind will be permitted.

Other necessities would include a water bottle and a towel for any instructor-led fitness classes.

Strollers and pets will not be allowed.

The YMCA building is still closed at this time, and no facilities are available at War Memorial Field. Field entry and exit will be the middle gate between the YMCA and War Memorial Field — the main gate will not be open.

War Memorial Field is maintained and operated by the Warren Sports Boosters, a 501c3 non-profit group of volunteers who also provide scholarships and support for all Warren athletic teams and athletes, and does not receive any funding from the school district.
