Warren Suffrage Centennial celebration continues

The Warren Suffrage Centennial celebration continues in 2020. PA ratified the 19th Amendment on June 4, 1919, but the US Congress did not pass it until Aug 18, 1920, giving the Women the Right to Vote after 72 years of suffrage.

Several organizations continue to do events, displays, programs, etc., for this year’s celebration. Currently, at the Warren County Historical Society, cases of memorabilia and pictures of notable Warren women of the 1800s — and later — are displayed. Several were part of the Suffrage era. One display shows a timeline of the suffrage movement and some memorabilia including a “charm” of the Suffrage Justice Bell. They are collecting more names and any memorabilia of the suffrage time period. Greeting cards with pictures of national suffrage events are for sale benefiting the Historical Society at 210 Fourth Ave., Warren.

The May Issue of Stepping Stones published by the Warren County Historical Society is devoted to “Celebrating Woman Suffrage — The Role of Warren County and Surround Areas.”

In February, the Warren Public Library will have a window display of the suffrage era plus how it led to the forming of the National League of Women Voters which is celebrating its 100th Anniversary in 2020. The library also has bookmarks listing books and DVDs about the Suffrage Era and Suffragettes. Future plans include a book signing by Warren native Penny Colman who writes on the suffrage movement and will introduce her new book. The library also developed a resource file for organization and the public to learn more about what was happening in Warren County and their organization. Contact Jenn Franklin at the library for more information.

The Daughters of the American Revolution’s 2020 high school scholarship essays will include the Suffrage Era and women gaining the right to vote. Contact Penny Woldbolt for more details and the entry due date is March 15.

Zonta continues to collect “100 Notable Women of Women County” of the past and currently. Zonta and the Historical Society are helping to add Warren to the National Historical Trail project. Contact Jennifer Bliss for nominated names for the listing. The Jefferson DeFrees Family Center – Women Are Wonderful event on Feb. 8 will have a workshop speaker on the Suffrage Era.

The August 11-15 Warren County Fair departments and museum will have themes relating to Suffrage and Voting Rights. Contact Bliss with items you may have.

The Centennial group members suggest family vacations to several historical places as the Susan B. Anthony home — www.susanb.org — in Rochester, N.Y., the National Women’s Rights Historical Park in Seneca Falls, N.Y. — www.nationalparks.org — or the The Pennsylvania Museum in Harrisburg — statemuseumpa.org — with special displays on Suffrage; and across the street a replica of the Justice Bell in the Capitol Rotunda June 1-31. The Justice Bell then travels to Erie at the Campus of the Hagen History Center in July to mid-August. Philadelphia has celebration events planned — www.justicebell.org is another source of celebrations for families to learn the history.

Organizations looking for a program on Warren Suffrage including the Justice Bell visiting Warren, contact Phyllis Wright at 726-1198 for speakers. Groups are encouraged to publicize their part in the celebration in the media and among their members.
