TAI-CHI for Arthritis — Mondays, and Wednesdays at 11:00 am in the education room. Tai-chi has been shown to improve flexibility and balance. This Health & Wellness class is free to all participants.

Another free class is the Healthy Steps in Motion Exercise Class on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11:00 to 11:30 in the Rec Room. They are both evidenced-based classes that have been proven to improve your health! Class is almost full so call to sign up (814-723-3237).

ACTIVITIES

You’re invited to the Allegheny Community Center to enjoy the following activities:

There are a lot of fun holiday activities going on at the ACC! The Youth Connection will be performing on the 10th at 11:00; at 9 am on the 11th, you can help to bake cookies; entertainment and pizza at 2:00 pm December 17th; on the 12th the Maranatha band will perform and on the 19th – Ellen Paquette will play the harp at the Christmas lunch; hop on the bus and view the lights around Warren on December 16th at 5 pm. Call the center for more info about any of these activities or to sign up.

GAME TIME WITH DARLINGS’ HOME HEALTH CARE– The first Thursday of the month at 11:15 am! Fun and interactive games with Lindsay Bevivino; in the dining room.

 MONTHLY BIRTHDAY CAKE – 1st Thursday of every month at noon. Enjoy a slice of birthday cake and celebrate with those who have a birthday this month. The cake is compliments of Warren Manor.

WARREN CHRISTIAN WOMEN’S CONNECTION – invites you to their monthly meetings every second Tuesday of the month at noon for lunch and programs. Call Lee Jones at 723-5952 for more info and to sign up for the luncheon.

BILLIARDS – The ACC has a beautiful billiards table for you to hone up your skills on in the dining room. Players meet on Mondays and Wednesdays at 9:30 am.

BLOOD PRESSURE TESTING – Every 1st and 3rd Monday of the month from 10:45 to 11:45 am.

ACC’s SUNSHINE BOWLING LEAGUE – meets at 12:30 pm at the Riverside Lanes at Struthers Street in Warren. Contact Zelda Kittell at 406-4216 for more info or to sign up.

REGULAR BINGO – Mondays at 1:00 pm in the dining room for prize bingo. Thursdays at 12:45 pm in the dining room. WARREN MANOR BINGO – First Wednesday of the month. SCRABBLE CHALLENGE – Monday’s at 12:30 pm in the rec room. Good mental exercise.

MAH-JONGG – Fascinating rummy-like game played with tiles instead of cards. Originating in China, the game dates back to the time of Confucius. Come learn how to play on Wednesdays at 1 pm. Open to the public.

INSPIRATION HOUR- Tuesdays from 10:00 to 11:00 am. Jim Reese conducts studies.

ALLEGHENY BELLES LINE DANCING PRACTICE – at the Allegheny Community Center on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 12:45 to 1:45 pm. It’s an enjoyable way to get exercise.

WII, CARDS AND GAMES – players are always invited to play with no advance signup required.

Mon, Thurs, Fri 9 am–4:30 pm, (814)968-5667. These Internet Cafés are made available to consumers through a PA Dept of Aging Senior Center Grant to be used for accessing the Internet. Come check out the center nearest you and enjoy the availability to connect with friends and loved ones on Facebook, pay your bills, check your email, file your taxes, check on your Medicare benefits and much, much, more! Children under the ages of 17 must be accompanied by an adult. Users must sign a computer use agreement. This project is supported by Experience, Inc., your local Area Agency on Aging & the Pennsylvania Department of Aging.

CENTER CLOSURES – All centers will be closed on December 24th and 25th for the Christmas Holiday. In case of inclement weather, centers are closed if the school districts close.

Remember to call ACC at 723-3237 by 11:00 am at least 2 DAYS IN ADVANCE to make your noon lunch reservations. A monthly meal calendar can be picked up at the center and meals can be reserved well in advance, just not less than 2 days in advance. The suggested reserved-meal donation for all those 60 and over is $3, those under 60 years of age pay $4/person. All noon lunches are well balanced and planned to provide maximum nutritional benefits. ACC AUXILIARY NEWS – The ACC Auxiliary is an advisory group that serves as the fundraising branch of the organization. They meet monthly to discuss programming and fundraising needs. Here are the current projects that they are working on:

The Auxiliary will once again be collecting hats, mittens, and scarves for children this fall. You can drop off your handmade or purchased items at the center.

We are looking for people who want to help in our community! Are you good with numbers? Become a volunteer in the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program in our area! You will receive specialized training from an IRS-certified VITA volunteer, so don’t worry if you don’t know that much about taxes! Volunteer roles include being a scheduler, a reviewer or a tax preparer. Call Sue at the ACC at 814-723-3237 if you are interested in finding out more about this rewarding opportunity!

Teach a class! – Have a hobby or skill that you would like to share? Call Sue at the ACC to talk about the possibilities!

Blankets for Babies, the Cancer Center and the Vets Hospital – love to knit, crochet or sew? The ACC collects and distributes blankets throughout our area to those in need.

Help at your local senior center with meal preparation, office work or just assisting the staff with cleaning! Call Sue at the ACC for more info at 814-723-3237.

Become an Ombudsman (which is Swedish for “citizen representative”) to be an advocate of elderly residents in Personal Care Homes, Nursing Facilities, Domiciliary Care Homes, and anyone receiving Long Term Care Services in the community. Learn how to help people with their Medicare and other State benefits as an APPRISE counselor. APPRISE is the State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) for Pennsylvania’s Medicare Beneficiaries. APPRISE will help Pennsylvanians with Medicare understand their health insurance options and help them make sound decisions about what is best for them. Established in 1968, Experience, Inc., the Area Agency on Aging, is dedicated to meeting the needs of senior citizens of Warren and Forest Counties. Experience, Inc. is a nonprofit company. They offer a wide variety of programs and services created for seniors to enhance the quality of life. Their services are designed with your long-term independence in mind. Here is an explanation of the services provided by Experience, Inc., your area agency on aging:

APPRISE is a free health insurance counseling program designed to help all Pennsylvanians with Medicare. Counselors are specially trained staff and volunteers who can answer your questions about Medicare and provide you with objective, easy-to-understand information about Medicare. This service is free.

PA PROPERTY TAX AND REBATE PREPARATION ASSISTANCE – If you have a Property Tax and Rent Rebate that needs to be prepared, Elaine Krill at Experience, Inc, Warren/Forest Area Agency on Aging can help! Call her at (814) 723-3763, extension 123.

IN-HOME CARE SERVICES – A professional Care Management staff provides service coordination care through an assessment plan of your needs.

FAMILY CAREGIVER SUPPORT–Families are the major provider of long-term care, but research has shown that caregiving exacts a heavy emotional, physical and financial toll. Experience, Inc. provides programs and services that can help by providing respite care and financial reimbursement for those who qualify.

HOME DELIVERED MEALS–Meals are delivered to older adults, those with disabilities, or anyone who qualifies by the inability to prepare a nutritious meal for themselves.

Personal Care and Home Support–Personal Care Services provides “hands-on” care in the home to individuals 60+ who are unable to independently meet their personal hygiene needs or perform activities of daily living. 

PERSONAL EMERGENCY RESPONSE SYSTEM–The Personal Emergency Response System or PERS, are home devices that connect older adults to a 24-hour call center with the push of a button.

SENIOR COMMUNITY CENTERS–Experience provides community supports in centers throughout Warren & Forest Counties – Nutrition and Health Programs, Socialization, Education & Personal Growth, Care Management for Aging Services, & Volunteer Opportunities.

The Warren-Forest Area Agency on Aging will serve the following lunch menu at senior centers throughout Warren & Forest counties for the week of 12/9 – 12/13: Allegheny Community Center in Warren – Monday: Stuffed Pepper, Whipped Potatoes, Carrots, Pudding; Tuesday: Lemon Pepper Chicken, Rice Pilaf, Green Beans, Bread & Fruit; Wednesday: turkey Ruben, Tossed Salad, Vegetable Soup, Roll & Fruit; Thursday: Chicken Taco, Black Beans, Rice & Fruit. Chef salads are available every day as a meal option at the ACC. Marienville: Tues., Wed. & Thurs. meals from the ACC lunch schedule. Endeavor: Tues. & Wed., meals from the ACC lunch schedule, and Friday the meal of Pork Loin/Gravy, Potatoes, Peas, Bread & Fruit. Tidioute: Mon., Tues. & Thurs. from the ACC lunch schedule; Sheffield: Mon. & Thurs. meals from the ACC lunch schedule and Friday the meal of Pork Loin/Gravy, Potatoes, Peas, Bread & Fruit.

Eligible participation is 60 years and older with a suggested meal donation of $3. Under 60 years of age, the cost is $4. Call the center of your choice from the list above to make your lunch reservation two days prior to the day you wish to eat there, as the orders are placed with the catering company that prepares the lunches. The menu is subject to change if necessary.
