4-H’ers compete at PA State Horse Show

The 58th annual Pennsylvania State 4-H Horse Show held October 27-29 at the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex and Expo Center in Harrisburg was a successful show for Warren County 4-H members. More than 700 youth from over 55 counties participated in 73 performance classes throughout the weekend. There were over 1,600 entries shown by youth that qualified for the show.

The state show is the final competition of the year for 4-H horse members enrolled in performance horse projects. To be eligible for the show, members must advance through qualifying competitions at county and district levels. Events include showmanship, horsemanship, equitation, pleasure, over fences, driving, western riding, reining, trail and timed events. A therapeutic riding division for riders with special needs is also included.

For Warren County 4-H’ers, Dakota Hultberg of Frewsburg, N.Y., and Don’t Buck the System, placed first in the Beginner Western Horsemanship class. Dakota is a member of the Scandia Trail Blazers club. She also placed second in Beginner Western Pleasure and third in Western Grooming and Showmanship ages 8-11 at the show. Dakota also showed her mini horse, Emmett, in the in-hand jumping class.

Ava Whiteman of Kane placed second in Barrel Race Horses ages 8-13 with her horse Macy. Ava is a member of the Kinzua Ridge Runners.

Samantha Nyweide of Panama, N.Y., placed second with her mini horse Cody in Miniature Horse Driving ages 8-13. She and Cody also placed fourth in Miniature In-hand Trail and fourth in Western Grooming and Showmanship ages 12-14. Samantha is a member of the Sunset Bandits.

Hunter Peterson of Russell placed third in Saddle Seat Equitation, ages 14-18, and fifth in Saddle Seat Pleasure with his horse, Thorn. Hunter is a member of the Scandia Trail Blazers.

Audrey Smith of Warren placed fourth with Playboy in Beginner Western Pleasure and eighth in Western Grooming and Showmanship, ages 8-11. She also participated in Beginner Trail and Beginner Western Horsemanship. Audrey is a member of the Sugar Grove Ruff Riders.

Halie Cass placed fifth with Skip a Superjet, in Low Equitation over Fences, ages 14-18. She also sixth in Low Working Hunter Horses and seventh in Hunter Hack. She also participated in Breed Type Hunter Under Saddle. Halie is a member of the Sanford Saddles & Spurs.

Melissa Burton of Kane and her horse, Gunn, placed sixth in Western Grooming and Showmanship, ages 8-11. She also participated in Western Pleasure Horses. Melissa is a member of the Scandia Trail Blazers.

Emily Allison of Panama, N.Y., placed sixth in Western Horsemanship, ages 15-18, with her horse, Getting Great. She also participated in Western Pleasure Horses, ages 14-18. Emily is a member of the Scandia Trail Blazers.

Katie Downs of Bear Lake placed ninth in Western Pleasure Ponies with her horse, Shamrock. Katie also participated in Western Horsemanship, Western Grooming and Showmanship, and Open Trail. She is a member of the Sugar Grove Ruff Riders.

Audrey Ferrie of Warren placed ninth in Western Pleasure Horses, ages 14-18, with her horse, Dayton. She also participated in Western Grooming and Showmanship, ages 15-18, and Western Horsemanship. Audrey is a member of the Scandia Trail Blazers.

Kassidy Turner of Pittsfield placed ninth in Cutback Horses, ages 8-13, with her horse, Cowboy Tek. They also participated in Western Grooming and Showmanship, ages 12-14, Barrel Race Horses, ages 8-13, and Pole Bending Horses, ages 8-13. Kassidy is a member of the Scandia Trail Blazers.

Gracie Anthony of Sugar Grove placed 10th in Pole Bending Ponies, ages 8-13, with her horse, Ginger. She is a member of the Scandia Trail Blazers.

Bryceton Maille of Pittsfield placed 10th in Raised Box Keyhole Horses, ages 8-13, and 10th in Cutback Horses, ages 8-13. He and his horse Ray are members of the Sanford Saddles & Spurs.

Samantha Hulings of Kane placed 10th in Open Trail Horses, ages 8-13, with her horse, Crow. She is a member of the Kinzua Ridge Runners.

Savannah Drake of Pittsfield participated in Cutback Ponies, Raised Box Keyhole Ponies, and Pole Bending Ponies with her gelding, Reiner. She is a member of the Sanford Saddles & Spurs.

Carlie Frost of Warren participated in Pole Bending Horses ages 14-18 with her horse Blaze. She is a member of the Sunset Bandits.

Ava Nyweide of Panama, N.Y., participated in Beginner Trail with her mare, Honey Bit. She is a member of the Sunset Bandits.

Shelby Ordiway of Sheffield participated in Pole Bending Horse ages 8-13 with her horse Freckles. She is a member of the Kinzua Ridge Runners.

Rachael Richards of Sugar Grove participated in Hunt Seat Equitation on the Flat and Breed Type Hunter Under Saddle Horses with her horse, Fudge. She is a member of the Scandia Trail Blazers.

Sandra Richards of Sugar Grove participated in Hunt Seat Equitation on the Flat ages 15-18 and Classic Hunter Under Saddle with her mare, Ruthie. She is a member of the Scandia Trail Blazers.

Maria Slack of Warren participated in Breed Type Hunter Under Saddle Horses ages 14-18 with her horse Shane. She is a member of the Sunset Bandits.

Maya Weis of Columbus participated in Obstacle Trail Minimum Assistance and Walk Trot Equitation, Minimum Assistance with her horse Dia-Omega. Maya is a member of the Pittsfield Bronc Busters.

Brielle Whitney of Sugar Grove participated in Breed Type Hunter Under Saddle ages 14-18, and English Grooming and Showmanship with her gelding, Max. She is a member of the Scandia Trail Blazers.

4-H in Pennsylvania is coordinated by Penn State Cooperative Extension through the U.S. Department of Agriculture. 4-H programs are open to all boys and girls between the ages of 8 and 18 regardless of race, color, religion, sex, national origin, or disability.
