AARP driver courses set

The Allegheny Community Center (ACC) will be hosting two AARP Smart Driver Classes this fall at 42 Clark Street. All the classes will be from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Wednesdays. Advanced registration is recommended as class is limited to 25 attendees. For these courses at the ACC please call 723-3237 for registration.

An 8-hour course will be taught by Larry Jackson on Wednesday, September 6 and 13. Note: the two 4-hour classes required for this 8-hour class will be one week apart due to the reduced availability of facilities. This course is for those Pennsylvania drivers who have not taken the course before or took it over 3-years 3-months ago. This 8-hour class is $20 per person, ($15 for AARP members) paid by check to AARP or cash to the instructor on the first day of class. You do not have to be a member of AARP to take the course. In addition, there will be an additional charge of $2 per person to help defray the ACC’s operating costs – please bring cash for the ACC.

A 4-hour refresher class will be given October 11 by Charles Merroth for Pennsylvania drivers who have taken the course before, less than 3-years 3-months ago. For this class AARP is offering a Buy-one-get-one. For this class bring your spouse, best friend or neighbor and their AARP class fee will be waived. The cost ($20 for one person plus the BOGO) or ($15 for an AARP member and BOGO) can be paid by check to AARP or cash to the instructor on the day of the class. There will be an additional charge of $2 for every person to help defray the ACC’s operating costs (no BOGO). Please bring cash for the ACC.

These courses, revised in 2014, are intended to increase your personal safety by covering the basics of defensive driving. Just as important, the course is designed to make you aware of how changes in vision, hearing and physical reflexes due to aging can impact your driving. New vehicle and roadway features and new laws of the road will also be discussed. If you are over 55- years old you may be eligible for an automobile insurance premium reduction or discount of 5 percent for 3-years (ask your insurance agent – all drivers in the household may have to take the course) and there are no tests (written or driving).
