Warren County Doughboys Killed In Action

Of the 1,600 men from Warren County that left to serve in the Great War, 66 did not return. Some were killed by sickness or because their ship was torpedoed. These men were killed in action or died from their wounds as listed in Warren County Boys Over There, a book published by the Warren Historical Company in 1918:

¯ Raymond Vesling, Stoneham, Co. I, 112th Regt. France. July 5, 1918.

¯ Louie J. Seifert, Warren, Co. 4, 113th Machine Gunners. Killed August 6, 1918 by shell fire while bringing up provisions for comrades after he had volunteered for the task.

¯ Percy Lawson, Warren, Co. I, 112th Regt., France. August 7, 1918 of wounds.

¯ Stanley L. Wagner, Sheffield, Co. H, 112th Regt., France. August 8, 1918.

¯ Frederick L. Howard, Sugar Grove, Aviation. France. August 8, 1918.

¯ Robert Dewey Shaw, Tidioute, Co. A., 112th Regt. August 12, 1918.

¯ Frank M. Glendenning, Second Lieut., Co. B. 111th Regt., Former principal of schools at Sheffield. France. August 12, 1918 while leading his men toward German machine gun nests.

¯ Chester Theodore Sampson, Scandia. August 17, 1918.

¯ Charles F. Swanson, Chandlers Valley, France. September 15, 1918.

¯ Henry W. Hallgren, Youngsville, Sgt., Co. D, 314th Engineers. France. Wounded September 26, 1918. Died September 27, 1918.

¯ William J. Clancy, Garland. September 29, 1918.

¯ Elzie Lynch, Tidoute, Co. I, 112th Regt, France. September 29, 1918.

¯ Randall S. Houghton, Garland, Second Lieut., Co. A., 112th Regt. Killed in action September 29, 1918 in the battle of Argonne Forest.

¯ Frank S. Berglund, Warren, Co. B, 331st Regt., September 29, 1918.

¯ Clarense P. Spetz, Pittsfield, Co. E., 108th US Infantry. Killed in action on September 29, 1918 in the battle of Le Catelet.

¯ Franklin Lafayette Mattison, Clarendon, Co. I, 112th Regt. Killed in action on October 2, 1918 in the battle of Argonne Forest.

¯ Herman Hertzel, Warren. Wounded in France July 19, 1918 and died the next day. His mother did not learn of his death until December 7, 1918.
