Library Midwinter Benefit Jan. 28 at Warren Public Library

The Warren Public Library’s 10th Annual Midwinter Benefit will be held from 7 to 10 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 28, at the library.

Admission is a monetary donation, and the attire, well, “Add the Plaid,” by wearing your favorite plaid, check, or tweed.

There will be food and drink, and a free book gift to all donors.

Why is the event not at the Library Theatre this year?  The “hole” story is this — Because of the major renovations that will enhance the Struthers Library Theatre and make it more accessible, there is currently a hole where the stairs from the mezzanine should lead to the Library Room. The Library Room may not be accessible, .but the Warren Public Library, all three floors, is accessible and available for the Midwinter Benefit.

Ten years ago, Dean Wells hosted his own birthday party in the Library Room of Struthers Library Theatre and turned it into a fundraiser for the Warren Public Library. Over the past decade, the Library Midwinter Benefit has raised tens of thousands of dollars for the library. During that time, Wells has moved from full-time news reporter and part-time caterer to a full-time pit master/restauranteur/caterer and entrepreneur. He’s had to give up his involvement with Midwinter, but not his support of the event.

The 2017 event will introduce a number of changes, including a different venue. The Warren Public Library will be the host site. Partygoers can mingle in the lobby and reading rooms on the first floor of the library. The bar, also on the first floor, will be backlit by candlelight from the circular marble staircase.

The second-floor balcony will be decorated and arranged for socializing. The third-floor gallery will be open and a pre-scheduled exhibition will be on display. Both upper floors, including the upper-level handicapped restrooms will be accessible by elevator. The selection of refreshments, served on the first floor, will change each hour. In addition to beer and wine, coffee and non-alcoholic beverages will be available.

You’ll want to bring extra cash, a check, or credit card to take chances on the new 50/50 drawing and also on raffle items. This year, the silent auction has been replaced with a raffle table. You might go home with pottery by Marlene Leonard, an overnight stay at Santosha B&B in the Poconos, a two-night stay at luxurious LaTourelle Spa in Ithaca, a Pittsburgh Pirates package, wine fridge, Plaza pie for a year, a year of car washes, Bose speakers, a high-end kitchen mixer, and more.

This event is open to the public; call 723-4650 to RSVP. Donations and raffle tickets can be purchased with credit/debit cards at the registration table.
