Photo submitted to Times Observer January is National Soup Month. In celebration of this event, the Warren Public Library is sponsoring its 8th Annual Soup Recipe Contest on Monday, January 16th. Please call the Warren Public Library at 723-4650 no later than January 12th to pre-register for this event and let us know how many soups you will be entering. A minimum of 6 soups must be entered in order for this event to go forward. Participants may enter a maximum of three soups. The soups, along with a written copy of the recipe, must be prepared and brought to the Library on Monday, January 16th between 10 and 11:30 a.m. for judging. A panel of multiple judges will taste each soup and determine the first, second and third place winners. The three winning recipes will be served in the Slater Room on the third floor of the Library on Monday, January 30th. The public is invited to taste these winning recipes between the hours of 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Crackers and a beverage will also be served. Donations to defray the cost of the soup luncheon will be accepted but are not mandatory. Recipe booklets containing all recipes submitted from this year’s contest will be available at the library. Cash prizes will be awarded to the cooks of the 3 winning recipes.

Spaghetti dinner

The Allegheny Community Center is holding a spaghetti dinner from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 8. Homemade spaghetti and meatball dinner features an authentic old-world recipe, Italian bread, side salad, beverage and dessert. Take-outs available.  Price: $8; children under 12: $4; children 2 and under: free.

Senior center closings

Closed dates for all area senior centers and Experience, Inc. include:

Monday, January 2nd; and, Monday. January 16th.

Class lunch

The Warren High School Class of ’59 will meet at 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 3, at Perkins Restaurant and have lunch (facility is handicap accessible). Bring a guest or a spouse if you wish.
