Community Foundation announces PATH scholarship grants

The Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency has finalized its PATH matching grants for the 2015-2016 academic year, according to John Lasher, Executive Director of the Community Foundation of Warren County.

This year PHEAA made 152 awards totaling $274,042 in matching grants to Community Foundation scholarship recipients attending college or technical school in Pennsylvania. This raises the total awarded through direct scholarships from the Community Foundation and this matching grant program to $1,126,967.

These scholarship grants are awarded to students who receive a Community Foundation scholarship and attend a school in Pennsylvania.

“We automatically register students who receive a scholarship award from the Foundation and attend school in Pennsylvania for a PATH matching scholarship award,” Lasher said. “PHEAA has its own criteria for determining who is eligible to receive an award. Some students who receive scholarships from us are not eligible for PATH grants. Because their criteria are different from ours, not all of our recipients qualify for the matching grants.”

The amount granted to an individual student maxes out at $2,500.

“The agency determines the amount of the award, but the match will not exceed the amount awarded by the Foundation, and may be less than the grant we provided,” Lasher said. “The amount available for distribution to students, and the timing of the awards, are affected by the Pennsylvania state budget.”

For the 2016-2017 academic year, PHEAA has allocated $280,900 in matching grants to be awarded to students who receive scholarships from the Community Foundation of Warren County. “All eligible foundation scholarship recipients were registered prior to the September 30 deadline,” Lasher said. “We are very pleased to see the scholarship awards increase for students who choose to pursue their studies at Pennsylvania schools. Every extra dollar in scholarships decreases the loan balance that most students will face after graduation.”
