27 works of art

Juried exhibition of NPAA begins Feb. 1

An exhibition featuring 27 works by 19 artists begins at 5 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 1, through Feb. 29 at Crary Art Gallery in Warren.

Members of the Northwestern Pennsylvania Artists Association (NPAA) were juried into this show by Dr. Paula Burleigh, who teaches Art History at Allegheny College in Meadville, and earned her PhD from the CUNY Graduate Center in New York, N.Y.

Barbara Crone, Exhibitions Coordinator for NPAA, which is centered in Erie, proposed this exhibition in 2018. NPAA was founded in 1974 as a professional artists organization to exchange ideas between arti

sts and to promote the visual arts in the tri-county region. NPAA organizes several annual exhibits for its 140+ members’ participation, and funds college scholarships for high school seniors, among other activities.

“It was a pleasure to go through the submissions, and ultimately difficult to narrow it down,” Dr. Burleigh said. Though her final selections included a wide range of works, she “was struck by how many of these artists have eschewed the human figure in favor of careful attention to the natural environment, and in many cases to the non-human species that inhabit it. And yet it’s not a return to sublime and majestic landscape painting — more often, they suggest vulnerability and precarity.”

The opening reception on Saturday, Feb. 1, begins an hour earlier than in the past, at 5 p.m. At 6 pm Dr. Burleigh will make some remarks, when she presents awards to the artists.

In the first three weeks of the show, visitors to the gallery will be able to vote for their own favorite art in a special “People’s Choice” award. The results will be announced in the final week of February.
