Lady Dragons win OT thriller in title game rematch

Warren's MJ Fadale scored Warren's first goal in their 2-1 overtime win at Hickory on Thursday.

HERMITAGE, Pa. – Thursday’s Region 6 girls soccer showdown between Warren and Hickory could be a sign of things to come.

Freshman Ella Ordiway scored the biggest goal of her young varsity career, netting the overtime game-winner in a 2-1 triumph for the Lady Dragons in a rematch of last season’s District 10 3A title game.

The team was playing without star junior Kyleigh Wilson, who left Tuesday’s win over Meadville with an ankle injury. The team dedicated their play to Wilson and they turned in perhaps their best performance of the season to date.

Wilson’s status is undetermined at this time.

The Lady Dragons (7-2 overall, 6-1 Region 6) got on the board in the first half when MJ Fadale scored off of Sawyer Mohney’s corner kick.

“This win has so much meaning,” said Warren coach Jeremy Bickling. “It showed our character and that we can overcome setbacks.”

The defending D-10 champion Lady Hornets (4-4, 4-3) came out motivated and put a ton of pressure on the Lady Dragon midfield and defense.

“They really put us on our heels early,” Bickling said. “They were making it tough for us to get anything built beyond the middle third.”

The Lady Dragons were able to get control of the game midway through the first half and started getting opportunities built. Kyra Wotorson and Mikaala Deppen both getting a couple of opportunities that were cleaned up by Hickory’s goalkeeper.

Warren was able to finally finish off a chance to score when Seniors Fadale and Mohney connected on a corner kick. Fadale was able to find the back of the net with a header off of Mohney’s service from the corner.

The Lady Dragons held strong until under the final minute of the half. With 30 seconds left a Lady Hornet attacker was able to find her teammate in front of the net with the cross from the right side of the field.

“It’s frustrating to give a goal that late in the half but all we could do was regroup and get ready for the second half,” noted Bickling.

The two teams battled the next 40 minutes holding each other scoreless and remaining knotted at 1-1 through regulation time. The Lady Dragon defense holding Hickory to zero shots on goal in the second half.

The Lady Dragons immediately went to work on the Hickory goal in overtime. After several near misses, Senior Jessica Susz was able to connect a pass to a streaking Oridway coming from her right-wing position. The freshman buried the ball in the back of the net finishing off the ‘Golden Goal’ and giving Warren the win.

“We didn’t play anything close to our best soccer, but we played without a player that means a lot to us on and off the field. The girls wanted to win this game for Kyleigh,” Bickling said.

“We are pleased to see them work through this first half of the season the way they have. We have players playing harder then I’ve ever seen them play. They are playing for each other. We aren’t there yet, but tonight was a gut check moment and they came out on top.”
