Lucks/Korb win doubles title, Dragons finish second in team standings at Tri-County Tournament

Warren's Aidan Colosimo serves while his doubles partner Wesley Kiehl awaits the return during a match against Harbor Creek at Betts Park, Thursday, April 18, 2019. Colosimo and Kiehl were 6-0, 6-4 winners in their match as the Dragons topped the Huskies, 4-1.

SHARON, Pa. – Warren’s boys tennis team took second place in the annual Tri-County Tournament Wednesday in Sharon.

The team of Thomas Lucks and Eli Korb won the tournament title at first doubles. Seth Conarro was a finalist at fourth singles and the doubles team of Max Harrison and Aidan Colosimo made the finals at third doubles.

“Our team exceeded our expectations on almost every level,” Warren coach Travis Myler said.

In addition to the finalists, Caleb Ei (first singles), AJ Seyler (third singles), Wesley Kiehl and Stephen Ashbaugh (second doubles) and James Lawson and Elliott Neal (fourth doubles) were all semifinalists.

“This tournament really allowed us to see how much improvement every player has made over the year and we were very happy with the results,” Warren associate coach Thomas Pellegrino said.

Lucks and Korb met Greenville’s Ronnie Mutinelli and Nick Kytchak in the semifinals. The Dragons topped the Trojans, 8-4, to advance to the finals.

In the finals, the pair squared off against Hickory’s James Reda and Alex Nelson. Lucks and Korb dispatched their opponents with a 10-5 victory to win the tournament.

Conarro defeated Meadville’s Joe Su, 8-7 (9-7), in the semis to advance to the finals. Conarro fell to Hickory’s Mike Morelli, 10-2.

Harrison and Colosimo were 8-2 winners over Grove City’s Eric Baumgartner and Daniel Gerwick in the semifinals at third doubles. They fell to Hickory’s Miguel Rojas and Ilia Kolikov by a 10-2 score.

Ei dropped an 8-4 decision in the semis to eventual champion Neil Chen of Mercyhurst Prep at first singles. The third singles runner-up, Harbor Creek’s Jaden Rocco, topped Seyler, 8-5, in their semifinal match. Kiehl and Ashbaugh were bested by Greenville’s Anthony Gentile and Cayde Davidson, 8-3, in the semifinals at second doubles. Gentile and Davidson won the tournament. Lawson and Neal fell to Hickory’s Eric Samoras and Cole Reynolds, 8-2, in the fourth doubles semifinals. Samoras and Reynolds finished second.

More than 150 players participated in the day-long event, that featured 91 matches.

“What a great day for a lot of tennis,” Pellegrino said.

Hickory won the team title with 45 points. Warren was second with 29, Harbor Creek third at 21 and Mercyhurst Prep fourth with 20.

“Our guys should be proud of our second-place finish, hold their heads up high, and prepare to go back next year looking for a title,” Myler said.

The Dragons will look to carry the momentum from the Tri-County Tournament with them to the Westwood Racket Club in Erie Saturday for the District 10 Singles Tournament.
