Dragons beat Olean for 14th win to close regular season
OLEAN, N.Y. – Warren’s baseball team got one final tune-up in Monday before starting its playoff run later this week.
The Dragons traveled to Olean (NY) and came away with a 3-1 win over the Huskies. Austyn Cummings homered and three pitchers combined to limit Olean to just two hits on the day.
Warren (14-6) got on the board early. With one out in the first, Micah Passmore was hit by a pitch and Cummings reached on an error to put runners on the corners. Passmore scored on Aidan Morrison’s ground out for a 1-0 Dragons lead.
Cummings led off the fourth with a solo homerun to double the lead to 2-0. In the fifth, Ryan Arnold hit a leadoff single and stole second.
One out later, he moved to third on a wild pitch. James Swanson reached on a fielder’s choice as Olean pitcher Jason Brooks tried to catch Arnold at third. Mitch Grosch singled in Arnold to make it 3-0.
“The win was blowing everything in, and Austyn hit his home run right through it,” said Warern coach Rick Eaton. “We probably had four or five balls that would have been extra-base hits but ended up being caught.”
Olean answered with a run in the bottom half. Nick Pantuso drew a leadoff walk and Henry Scanlon followed with a bunt single to put runners on first and second. Brooks walked with one out to load the bases. Brian Ramarge flied out to center and Pantuso just beat Baldensperger’s throw. Scanlon tried to advance to third on the play, but Morrison fired to Passmore and the Dragons got Scanlon in a rundown.
The Huskies got a runner in scoring position again in the seventh with two outs, but Hunter Loomis got Cole Anastasia to ground out to end the game.
Grosch started on the mound and pitched three scoreless innings. He allowed just one hit, walked one and struck out three. Ryan Rafalski gave up one earned run over two innings of relief on one hit. He walked three and struck out three. Loomis pitched two scoreless innings for the save. He didn’t allow a hit or a walk and had one strikeout.
“Our pitching did really well,” Eaton said. “We wanted to get all those guys some work today and they (Olean) only had two hits. Berdine threw last Thursday, so we’ll pitch him in practice on Wednesday and go from there. All four of those guys are pitching really well.”
Cummings had two hits on the day with a run scored and one RBI. Grosch had a hit and a RBI, Arnold had a hit and scored a run and Morrison drove in a run.
The Dragons await the winner of today’s District 10 quarterfinal game between Slippery Rock and Corry.
The semifinal match is scheduled for Friday with the time and location to be announced.
“We have to do all the little things right,” Eaton said. “When it gets to playoff time, there are a lot of tight games.”
