Warren softball grinds out road win over Franklin

Lex Nyquist homered in Warren's 5-4 win over Franklin on Thursday.

FRANKLIN – Warren made the most of its five hits, holding off Franklin, 5-4, on Thursday.

Ellie Lobdell battled for seven innings, leaving two runners on in the seventh to hold on.

Trailing 1-0, Lobdell’s two-run blast in the fourth gave the Dragons (6-1) the lead. An inning later, Lex Nyquist ripped a two-out fastball over the left-field fence for a 4-1 lead.

In the top of the sixth, Lobdell singled and Gracie Wood added insurance with a two-out triple.

Those runs were needed as Franklin added a run in the sixth and then four seventh-inning hits brought the Knights to within one. With two on and two out, Celia Chase fielded a slow roller up the first-base line and flipped to second baseman Julia Lobdell covering first for the game.

Ellie Lobdell and Gracie Stryffeler for Franklin (2-3) finished with nine strikeouts each.

“Again, we grinded out another win,” said Warren coach Jon Sitler. “Ellie was not on her ‘A’ game, but battled every inning. The defense has to be more aggressive, but we made the plays when we had to. Gracie Wood made a beautiful catch in deep center to save a run, and Kiersten Hoffman had another solid effort at catcher in relief of Grace Wortman.

“We have a lot to improve upon, especially defensively and with our small game, but we’re settling into our season with hopefully our best ball in front of us.”

Warren hosts Erie at noon on Saturday.
