Warren boys’ rally falls short at Oil City

OIL CITY, Pa. – Try as they might, the Warren Dragons couldn’t quite rally from a double-digit deficit in a 76-71 Region 6 loss at Oil City on Friday.

The Dragons put four players in double figures, led by Griffin Suppa’s 18 points. Oil City did the same, however, led by Hunter Hahn’s game-high 23.

“We did a poor job rotating to cover up the player who left to help,” said Warren coach Jeff Berdine. “They made some 3-point shots and we chased a lot on defense tonight, so defensively we were not good and got killed on the offensive glass.

“We made a nice run at them trapping and pressing, we just couldn’t get enough stops. When we needed to make a play they got the loose ball or offensive rebound and made shots.”

The Dragons (8-8 overall, 6-4 Region 6) actually led at halftime, 36-34, but were outscored by the Oilers (9-7, 4-5) 21-7 in the third quarter.

Jake Kupchella added 16 points for the Dragons, while Caleb Ei and Aidan Morrison had 15 each. Morrison had a team-high 6 rebounds, Kupchella dished out four assists and Suppa, Morrison and Mitch Grosch had two steals each.

Both teams made eight 3’s.

Holden Stahl had 15, Cameron Muir 14 and Luke Homer 12 for OC.

“We had numerous opportunities to win this game and either turned the ball over after getting a steal or made a bad decision with it and didn’t get a good look,” Berdine added.

Warren won the JV game, 58-52. Ryan Arnold poured in 19 points, Ben Berdine 14 and Ryan Rafalski 10.

The Dragons return to action Monday at Ridgway.
