Sheffield’s Knowles, Finch advance to D-9 semifinals
CLEARFIELD, Pa. – Sheffield’s Nick Knowles and Ethan Finch are through to the semifinals at the District 10 Class 2A wrestling championships.
Knowles, a senior and No. 2 seed in the 285-pound weight class, earned a second period fall over Cameron County’s Tim Haselman in their quarterfinal match.
Finch, a sophomore and No. 4 seed in the 170-pound weight class, needed just 1:33 to pin Redbank Valley’s Colton Bartley in their first-round match. He followed that up with a hard-fought 6-4 decision over No. 5 seed Derek Kallenborn of Port Allegany in the quarterfinals.
In the semifinals, Knowles will match up against No. 6 seed Hayden Thompson of Brockway, who earned a mild upset over No. 3 seed Kobe Bonanno of Redbank Valley, 4-1.
The other semifinal match at 285 pits top-seed Colby Whitehill of Brookville against No. 4 seed Shawn Nystrom of Kane.
The top four seeds held serve at 170, where Finch will meet No. 1 seed Elliot Park of Brookville in the semifinals, and No. 2 seed Tyler Watts of Johnsonburg will battle No. 3 seed Cameron Whisner of Kane in the other semi.
All the other Wolverines fell into the consolations.
Action gets underway today at 10:30 a.m. from Clearfield High School, with the semifinals and consolation rounds three and four.
At 3:30 p.m. will be the Parade of Champions, followed by the finals and consolation finals at 4.
The top four in each weight class advance to regionals.
