Beyer breaks school record in 100 backstroke; Dragons sweep Erie

Warren’s Andrew Beyer opens the 200 IM with the butterfly during a meet with Erie at the Warren County YMCA, Thursday, Feb. 7, 2019. Beyer won the event to help lead the Dragons to a 107-61 win over the Royals.

Warren swimmers bounced back from a tough loss at Prep/Villa Monday with a sweep of visiting Erie Thursday.

The girls won 90-79, while the boys picked up a 107-61 win. In the process, Andrew Beyer set a new school record in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:01.74, besting the time set by Logan Gearhart in 2014 (1:02.44).

“He was pretty pumped up about it,” Warren coach Russ Beyer said. “We’ve been having some hard practices and it’s paying off.”

Kaelah Knupp helped get the Dragons off to a good start, coming from behind to make sure Warren got first and third place in the girls 200 medley relay.

“Kaelah came out and kind of set the tone in the 200 medley relay,” Beyer said. “They all worked hard and she came from quite a distance back and got third place for that relay.

Warren’s Paige Johnson swims the back leg of the backstroke in the 200 IM during a meet with Erie at the Warren County YMCA, Thursday, Feb. 7, 2019. Johnson took second in the event and the Dragons defeated the Royals, 90-79.

I think it inspired a lot of the kids and we didn’t slow the rest of the meet.”

The Dragons took multiple top 3 finishes in nearly every event throughout the meet. Logan Johnson became the newest district qualifier with his second place finish in the 200 IM.

“Hopefully this is a precursor for what’s to come for senior night on Monday,” Beyer said. “Hopefully, we’ll get a couple more district qualifiers.”

The Dragons host Corry Monday night in their final meet of the regular season.
