With Senior Night win over Saegertown, EHS assured of hosting first round D-10 match
A bump, a win and a home playoff match for Eisenhower wrestling.
Garrett Head, normally at 145, moved up to 160, which in turn bumped up Alex Barnett and Ethan Chambers up a weight class. They all won via pin, as the Knights took care of a tough Saegertown team, 42-33 on Thursday.
The victory clinches a home first-round playoff match in the District 10 Class 2A duals on Wednesday as the No. 2 team from Region 3.
“That’s big for us, “said Eisenhower coach Kris Black. “It’s much easier to prepare and get ready for a home match.”
Although they did and still do want more.
“Second in the region is … kind of a consolation prize,” he said.
On Thursday, Saegertown won the first five bouts of the night, three of which were close decisions against Easton Hedman at 126, Gannon Jaquay at 132 and Josh Bortz at 145.
“I was impressed with Easton and Gannon. They came out and really fought,” Black said.
“They didn’t give up any bonus points. Josh lost a heartbreaker, which could have gone either way.
“We made a bump tonight and it was the right bump to win the match against a really solid Saegertown team. They have some tough kids. They came ready to go and we knew they would. Our guys came out and got it done.”
From 160 on, the Knights turned it on, winning six straight, five via pin, which all came in the first period, and one by forfeit.
By the time Head, Barnett, Chambers, Cael Black, Joey Bauer and Jeramy Card were done, Eisenhower went from down 21-0 to up 36-21.
“We really started rolling right up through,” coach Black said. “The guys went out and got us the bonus points, which we needed to do. It was a really nice way to end it. I was happy about that.”
Logan Jaquay added to the first period pin total at 113, capping an impressive performance from the Knights.
It was also senior night, as Barnett, Head, Bauer, Card, Chambers and Nate Holt were all honored following the match.
That group, along with the rest of the Knights, now turns their attention to the Sharon duals on Saturday.
If all goes right, they’ll be in Sharon on back-to-back weekends (that’s where they final 8 in the team duals meet).
The Knights just missed finishing in the top three last year and earning a trip to the state tournament. Needless to say, that is a goal this time around.
As of press time, it wasn’t official as to who the Knights would face on Wednesday, pending results of some Thursday matches, but signs pointed toward Harbor Creek.
“We have a lot of work to do,” Black said. “We have to win that wrestle-in match to get to the duals and go down there and make things happen. We have to concentrate on the Sharon Duals first, thought.”
