Warren boys grind out Region 6 road win over LeBoeuf

WATERFORD, Pa. – It wasn’t pretty, but the Warren Dragons will certainly take a Region 6 road win any way they get it.

Griffin Suppa and Aidan Morrison scored 10 points each and the Dragons played stifling defense en route to a 46-32 victory over Fort LeBoeuf on Tuesday.

With the win, Warren (6-5 overall, 4-1 Region 6) kept pace atop the region standings with Titusville, which beat Harbor Creek.

“It’s one of those games that really starts with defense,” said Warren coach Jeff Berdine. “You’ll take a region win on the road any way you can get it. I was really proud of how the kids played defensively.”

The Dragons led throughout the game, but really weren’t able to put it away until late.

Warren led 8-4 after the first quarter.

“Both teams were a little slow out of the gate tonight,” Berdine said. “I thought we did a very good job in the first quarter, the problem was we only scored eight points.”

Berdine’s team was equally suffocating in the second quarter, but did allow a pair of LeBoeuf 3’s to Dylan Proctor and Brendan Drayer and led 20-15 at halftime.

“I thought we only had two bad defensive possessions in the second quarter, but we gave up 3’s on both of them,” he said.

Berdine also noted the solid play of his bench – Mitchell Grosch, Tom Bablak, Ben Berdine and Jake Funari, as Jake Kupchella was saddled with foul trouble.

After an evenly played third quarter, the Dragons were able to wear down the Bison (2-10, 1-4) in the fourth, taking a double-digit lead.

“We were able to spread it out, get to the free throw line and finish when we had the chances,” Berdine said.

Caleb Ei had another strong game for the Dragons as well with eight points, six rebounds, three assists and two steals. Morrison added five rebounds and three assists and Devin McMeans and Grosch had six points each.

Joe Riley led LeBoeuf with 12 points.

Bablak had 14 points in a 42-35 JV win for Warren.

The Dragons return to action on Friday, hosting Corry, which will conclude the first half of their Region 6 schedule.
