Villa Maria hands Warren girls first loss

ERIE, Pa. – Villa Maria rudely ended the Warren Lady Dragons’ 11-game win streak to start the season, 55-20 on Monday.

The game was an anomaly in many ways for Warren, but perhaps no stat was more telling then the Victors (9-2 overall, 3-0 Region 6) holding Lady Dragon star senior Margo Loutzenhiser without a point. It is just the second time in Loutzenhiser’s varsity career that she has been held scoreless, with the other coming in her freshman season.

Monday night’s game was all Villa right from the start, as they jumped out to a commanding 19-1 lead after the first quarter.

“I felt like if we played our best, we could get them,” said Warren coach Lisa LaVan.

“They got us on our heels early and we never recovered.”

The Childress sisters – Taylor and Riley – led Warren (11-1, 2-1) with 7 and 6 points respectively.

Addisyn Cross was the only player in double figures for Villa with 16 points.

For the talented freshman class, led by Emma Ruhlman and Riley Childress, this was their first loss in 33 games dating back to junior high.

“They don’t understand the concept of losing, which is a good thing,” LaVan said. “We’ve built a strong culture of winning. It’s what I love about them, they hate to lose. There were some tears in the locker room afterwards, because they hate it that much.”

So how will they regroup, with another big Region 6 game at home on Thursday coming up against Harbor Creek?

With leadership, of course, led by the three seniors – Loutzenhiser, Sierra Matson and Alanna Hultberg.

“Leadership is going to bring us back to where we need to be tomorrow at 5 p.m. (practice),” LaVan said. “I trust my leaders, my three seniors. They will right the ship and have them ready to go, I have no doubt. One loss doesn’t define us. Most teams would take our record in a heartbeat. A lot of coaches would want what we have.”
