Warren swimmers beat St. Marys in opener

Warren’s Stephen Ashbaugh waves the sign letting Cade Johnson know what lap he’s on in the 400m freestyle during a meet with St Mary’s at the Warren County YMCA, Monday, Dec. 11, 2018. Johnson won the event.

The Warren swim team got off to a flying start Monday as the boys and girls swept visiting St. Mary’s.

The boys defeated the Dutch, 95-47, while the girls won 92-85.

“They were pumped up and ready to perform,” Warren coach Russ Beyer said. “We were unsure how it was going to go, but they were like a caged animal ready to get out.”

Most of that uncertainty was due to a large crop of incoming freshmen and some upperclassmen new to the team.

“We were very pleased with the new swimmers,” Beyer said. “They did well. They were nervous, but they performed. We have a very talented freshman class and I was anxious to see how they would do.”

Warren’s Max Harrison tries to catch St. Mary’s Kevin Kuhar in the 100 free during their meet at the Warren County YMCA, Monday, Dec. 11, 2018. Kuhar held on to win the event, but Harrison and the Dragons won the dual meet.

Those freshmen were a big part of the victory for both the boys and girls.

Katie Beyer had individual wins in the 100 and 200 free, and was part of the winning 200 medley and 200 freestyle relay teams. Sophie Olsen won the 400 free and was on the winning 200 and 400 feestyle relay teams.

Derek Hahn and Max Harrison each had at least one second place finish and both were part of the winning 200 medley relay. Graham Carr swam the first leg for the first place 200 free relay.

“The new swimmers stepped up to the challenge and did a nice job,” Beyer said.

In addition to the team win, 10 swimmers qualified for the District 10 meet. For the girls, Sophie Olson (400 free), Katie Beyer (100 and 200 free), Sarah Nugent (100 back) and Paige Johnson (100 breast) all punched their ticket to districts, while Max Harrison (100 free and 100 back), Derek Hahn (200 IM and 100 fly), Connor Fehlman (100 breast), Cade Johnson (200 and 500 free), Andrew Beyer (200 free and 100 back) and Stephen Ashbaugh (100 breast and 50 free) qualified on the boys side.

Warren’s Cara Anderson flys down the lane during a dual meet against St Mary’s at the Warren County YMCA, Monday, Dec. 11, 2018.

“That’s what surprised me the most,” Beyer said. “The number of district qualifiers we had.”

The Dragons will have to quickly put this season-opening win behind them as they travel to powerhouse Mercyhurst Prep Thursday before heading to an invitational at the Hagerty Family Events Center (formerly the Prep Villa Events Center) Saturday.

“We’re excited,” Beyer said. “It will be a good benchmark.”
