Statement week: Lady Dragons dominate Corry for second consecutive win over state-ranked team

Warren’s Ellie Lobdell hits the ball between Corry’s Maddi Vona (26) and Olyvia Carr (33) during the second set against Corry on Thursday. Lobdell had nine kills as the Lady Dragons rolled to a 3-0 win over the No. 2 ranked Class 2A team in Pennsylvania in front of an electric crowd at Joseph A. Massa Gymnasium.

With two of the top ranked teams in the state coming to their gym this week, Warren knew they would be in for a challenge.

After Thursday’s contest against Corry, they’re simply wondering who’s next.

The Lady Dragons disposed of the Lady Beavers, the No. 2 ranked Class 2A team in Pennsylvania, 3-0 (25-15, 25-17, 25-16) in front of an electric, capacity crowd at Joseph A. Massa Gymnasium.

And after taking care of the top ranked Class A team in the state, Cochranton, on Monday, it’s safe to say they have made a significant statement that should put all future opponents on notice.

“We’re really just working as a team and feeding off of each other,” said junior outside hitter Grace Wortman.

Warren’s Jordan Sitler goes up for one of her eight kills against Corry on Thursday

That was evident right from the get-go, as Warren never trailed in rolling to victory in each of the first two sets.

It’s something coach Mike Dolan noticed when they got behind for the first time at the start of the third game.

“I kind of felt it in the third game when we got down 3-0,” he said.

“We talked about weathering a storm, because we knew they were going to bring it. But we buckled down, re-focused and did a nice job.”

The attacking was exceptional from the moment Julia Lobdell’s first serve went up in the air.

Warren’s Lydia Latimer goes up for one of her team-high 11 kills during a 3-0 victory over Corry on Thursday at Joseph A. Massa Gymnasium.

And it was balanced.

Lydia Latimer led the way with 11 kills, while Ellie Lobdell and Celia Chase had nine and Jordan Sitler eight.

Setter Lex Nyquist had her pick of who to set up, and they all did a phenomenal job, jumping out to a commanding 14-6 lead in the first set and sending the crowd into a frenzy.

“It was extra exciting today because there were more fans,” Sitler said. “The entire gym was filled and the Flannel Panel was up the whole time and cheering the whole time.”

Corry made a run, getting as close as 16-14, but a kill by Latimer started a 9-1 run to close the game, which included an ace by Wortman and kills by Chase, Latimer and Sitler.

Julia Lobdell and the Warren volleyball team took care of Erie on Monday, 3-0.

“It’s just great teamwork,” Dolan said. “At one point, Lydia’s bombing away, at another point Lex is mixing it up. Jordan had some big swings, Ellie had big hits, Celia, Grace is playing great defense and Julia (Lobdell).”

Before everyone could get settled in for game two, it was 7-1 Warren after another ace by Wortman.

The Lady Dragons (9-0) opened up another 14-6 lead, but this time Corry wasn’t able to make a charge.

Chase, Sitler and Ellie Lobdell all had kills as Corry, which was also unbeaten coming into the contest, never got closer than seven the rest of the set.

“It’s fun because we were both undefeated and it was good to go out and get the win,” Wortman said.

The Warren Area High School volleyball team is one of several squads that will begin their quest for a D-10 title this week.

The Lady Dragons got down 3-0 in the third, but that was very short-lived, as they came back and took their first lead at 6-5 and never trailed again.

Nyquist , who had 33 assists, continued to distribute the ball effectively to all her hitters and, after Corry (9-1) closed to within 1, 14-13, Warren went on an 11-3 run to close out the match.

It was also Pink Out night, with all proceeds from a basket raffle, pie raffle, 50/50 and ‘In honor/memory of’ volleyballs given to Ms. Katie Rodgers, a WAEC teacher and Warren resident who is battling stage 3C m,etastatic colon cancer.

It was a great performance against a team and a program that is not just one of the tops in District 10, but in the state as well.

“It was fun to play with that pressure,” Sitler said. “I feel like if it was anyone else it wouldn’t have been as exciting.”

The Flannel Panel was loud all night, creating an incredible atmosphere as the Lady Dragons rolled to victory over Corry.

Latimer had five aces and eight digs to go along with her 11 kills, while Julia Lobdell had nine digs, Wortman four aces, Nyquist eight digs, Ellie Lobdell 11 digs and Chase eight digs and an ace.

The three sets dropped by Corry were as many as they had lost in nine matches coming into Thursday.

“You can’t win at a really high level unless you play as a team, and they killed it tonight playing as a team,” Dolan said. “It’s just great to have an opportunity to play two high-level teams like that in one week. You can see them all you want, but you have to go out there and make the plays, which we did.

And as the calendar has turned to October, the eyes will naturally gravitate toward what this team can do when the playoffs roll around.

“Our next goal is definitely D-10,” Sitler said.

But they know there’s still lots of room to get better, which should be scary for opponents.

“We just have to work on the little things, things we can improve, because there’s always something to improve on,” Wortman said.
