Eisenhower, WCCS earn victories

ERIE, Pa. – It wasn’t pretty, but they’ll take it.

Eisenhower went to five sets with Mercyhurst Prep on Thursday, winning 3-2, 26-24, 25-23, 25-27, 19-15, 15-8.

“It was ugly. The first four games we didn’t execute like we wanted to,” said Eisenhower coach Scott Olson. “You have to give credit to Mercyhurst Prep. They played hard and we made a lot of unforced errors.”

Eisenhower had there players who finishes with double digit kills, led by Cameran Edwards with 13, followed by Currie Hultman, who had another strong match with 12, and Tess Morningstar with 10.

Hultman also had a whopping 10 aces and 18 digs, while Edwards had 24 digs, Catrina Edwards 11 digs and four aces, Caroline Hishman 34 assists and Kiara Weber 10 digs and five aces.

In the fifth set, they played their best when they needed it.

“We were a completely different team,” Olson said. “I don’t know what triggered it, but our girls fought, they stayed with it.’

Eisenhower returns to action on Saturday at the Kane Invitational.

The Lakers won the JV contest, 19-25, 18-25.

Paige Edwards (2 kills, 10 digs, 5 aces), Bridget Gourley (9 digs, 2 aces), Catrina Edwards (4 digs), Destiny Nelson (2 digs) and Macy Elyer 2 aces) led EHS.

They kept the game close, but need to use their ability at pivotal moments to push ahead and keep the lead to win .

WARREN COUNTY CHRISTIAN 3, CCSI 0

Warren County Christian dominated from start to finish in a 25-12, 25-10, 25-10 over CCSI on Thursday.

“This was largely a serve-receive game,” said WCCS coach Mark Brenner.

McKenna Phelps, 10 service points, 4 aces, 5 kills, 2 digs; Rachel Beatty 6 service points, 3 kills, 9 assists; Emma Marino 4 service points, 2 aces, 11 kills, 2 digs; Krystal Kinney 16 service points, 5 aces, 1 kill, 1 dig; Gwen Reed 4 service points, 2 aces, 9 assists, 1 dig and Kiara Baker 11 service points, 2 aces, 5 kills, 2 digs led the Lady Lions.

“The real highlight was Krystal Kinney. She didn’t miss a serve and had five aces,” noted coach Brenner. “Also Kiara Baker did a great job and McKenna Phelps really did a good job.”

Their next match should provide more of a test, as they travel to face Erie Bethel today. The two teams went five in the first meeting, with the Lady Lions coming out with a 3-2 win.

“They’re a good ball-control team,” Brenner said. “It should be a good match.”

ST. MARYS 3, SHEFFIELD 1

Sheffield continues to make steady progress, as they took a set from St. Marys in a 3-1 setback, 25-27, 19-25, 25-22, 25-11 on Thursday.

“We really competed tonight,” said Sheffield coach Melissa Lemay. “We were right there in the first three and then just fell a little flat in the fourth.”
