Business Trip: Warren wraps up Region 6 title with win at Villa

Warren’s Lydia Latimer (2) keeps her eye on the ball as Lex Nyquist (5) sets it during the second set of a match against Villa Maria at the Prep and Villa Event Center, Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2018. Latimer finished with 14 kills and Nyquist 31 assists to lead the Dragons to a sweep of the Victors. The win gave Warren the Region 6 title.

ERIE, Pa. – The Warren volleyball team took a significant step toward reaching a primary team goal Tuesday, though it wouldn’t seem so based on the team reaction.

The Dragons went to the Prep-Villa Events Center and swept Villa Maria 25-13, 25-11 and 25-15 to clinch the Region 6 title. The post match celebration, or lack thereof, showed that this team has far bigger accomplishments on its mind.

“We have that mindset, that we’re just taking care of business,” Warren coach Mike Dolan said.

While winning the region crown was a team goal, it became apparent early in the season that it was a goal the team would likely have little trouble attaining.

“We’ve been playing so well,” Dolan said. “It’s big. (Winning the region) was one of our goals.”

The Dragons (13-0 overall, 9-0 Region 6) took a few points to get settled in, but with a 5-3 lead, Warren went on a 7-0 run to break open the first set. The Victors (7-7, 3-6) started to claw their way back in, and Kaitlyn Lipps came up with some key blocks to help Villa get back to 17-10.

“We knew we’d have to weather the storm,” Dolan s

aid. “This is a good team.”

Lydia Latimer answered with a strong kill to put momentum squarely back on the Warren side of the court and the Dragons rolled to a 25-13 win.

The momentum carried into set 2 as Warren jumped out to a 10-3 advantage. Again, Villa fought back, pulling to within four at 11-7. The Dragons slammed the door with a 7-1 run to gain an 18-8 lead. The Victors scored just three more points the rest of the way as Warren took the second set, 25-11.

“Somebody always seems to step up,” Dolan said. “Whether its Celia (Chase) with a kill or Jordan (Sitler) with a block.”

Warren’s Grace Wortman (14) goes up for a kill during a match against Villa Maria at the Prep and Villa Event Center, Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2018. The Dragons swept the Victors to clinch the Region 6 title.

Villa jumped out to a 3-0 lead to start the third set. Warren got within a point multiple times, but couldn’t quite get the tie. The Dragons got a kill to make it 8-7, and the Victors took a timeout. The break only seemed to energize the Dragons as they went on an 10-0 run to take control of the set. The fight was mostly gone from the Victors at this point and Warren took the set 25-15, the match 3-0 and the region title.

Latimer was a force for the Dragons again with 14 kills, 11 digs, four blocks and four aces. But as the Dragons have proven all season, they’re far from a one-man show.

Chase had 12 kills, nine digs and three aces, Ellie Lobdell had five kills, 12 digs and three assists, Sitler added five kills and a pair of blocks and Lex Nyquist had 31 assists and five digs.

“As good as Lydia is, if we’re not passing and Lex isn’t setting, it doesn’t work,” Dolan said. “We’re really playing like a team.”

Warren returns home Thursday for a Senior Night matchup with McDowell (11-4, 7-2). Another big crowd is expected as the Dragons honor Chase, Latimer, Ellie Lobdell, Julia Lobdell, Kadee Merenick and Trinity Wennberg for their contributions to the program.

“They’ve been together a long time,” Dolan said. “They’ve got a good team bond.”

Though the ceremonial aspect could be emotional, Dolan said he expects the business-like demeanor to return quickly.

“Once the ball is in the air, I expect they’ll do what they’ve been doing,” he said.
